Evidence of age letter for DVLA first registration

Hi All,

I am desperate to get a letter confirming the age of my Datsun 280zx so that DVLA would issue a V5 for it. It’s the RB conversion I’ve been working on and want to be present with it at simply Japanese this year - worked hard to get it MOT’d. It’s not perfect but is roadworthy. Mr F who usually does these letters has the details from my end warned me that there was a backlog of requests (fingers crossed but I know he is a busy man) so I am not sure if there is any other way of getting such a letter sooner keeping in mind the DVLA takes up to 6 weeks to get process the application. Nissan GB have been hopeless - have tried them a few times and even tried Nissan Hong Kong where the car was first registered with no success. The car came from New Zealand and as it is no longer on their system they cannot generate documents.

I rang dvla about my car and they said a lot of car manufacturers don't always have the month of manufacture so they told me in that case they would put it down as 31/12 of the year, have you got any documents with the year on

Yea car is on NOVA registry. I’ll try ring them again and plead the case. I have provided old tax disc equivalent that was with car and letter from the DVLA equivalent in NZ providing all the details they have in their system including year and chassis in a letter which was not sufficient apparently.

Hey all just for future reference if anyone else faces the same situation, I have managed to get a letter showing the details held by the DVLA equivalent in New Zealand (maybe same can be done from other countries when importing and paperwork cannot be sourced). It shows the car as 1980 (no month or date) and date of first registration in NZ as Aug 1984 (with a date as well). DVLA are going to use the 1984 date for purposes of establishing car’s age and therefore the issuing of age appropriate number plates because it is an accurate date as far as they are concerned. It’s a bit unfortunate as in a couple of years the car would be on zero road tax! So I will have a facelift 1983 datsun (my other one) and an apparently newer 1984 datsun which is actually the earlier spec model! I guess there is no changing a year of a car on the V5 at a future date if I were to get the date of manufacture info from somewhere.

That's a result, atleast you can get it registered now

Yes indeed! Now I am impatiently waiting for the letter from DVLA!

They have also confirmed that if I get more accurate dating evidence, I can get the year changed within 12 months so my best bet is to wait for club to issue a letter.
