A little bit more information.
The car has been sitting for 20-something years.
We pumped up the tires and all 4 held pressure.
The rear right wheel was stuck at first, but once we pulled it onto the transporter the wheel came loose.

the engine compartment doesn't look all that great, with a great deal of surface rust.
My nephew (=mechanic) immediately said the engine has to come out to sort out rust issues on the chassis legs underneath the engine.

All break lines have to be replaced, all rubber parts have to be replaced.

First jobs for me are now
1) check if engine turns around
2) clean up the interior
3) (=actually priority 1) find a place where i can start work on it
4) this list is never ending ;)

Are there some first checks you guys would do? Would you advice to try to start it before I take the engine out?

Thanks

I'd say be methodical in your approach, work your way through the fuel and ignition systems before trying to starting it. Check what's in the sump as well. Often it's just sludge!

Or you could just take the engine out if it's coming out anyway ... once out, inspections will be a lot easier, an you could start it (or attempt to) out of the car anyway.

Others more experienced will chime in here hopefully ...

Agreed.

Drain the sump and fill with 'thin' flushing oil if poss. for the start-up. Drain the float chambers too and the fuel tank, radiator. Check the thermostat etc etc.

The heater matrix may be leaking too after such a long 'lay-up'.

Your car looks very original I think it still has the rubber front spoiler doesn't it.

Yup, rubber front splitter(spoiler thing) is there.
'thin flushing oil'.. would you say something like 5w30?
I would feed fuel with a small tank right into (empty) carburetors
and indeed etc. etc a lot of checks.
maybe its better to not try and let the engine run.. we'll see

Is it necessary that it runs? Surely if it turns that is enough for now maybe ... if it runs, it runs, and then what? You'll turn it off! I am sure the fuel and ignition is going to get a good going through anyway - depends what your plans are for the car I think ...

You could try and do a compression test at least ...

I'd would have to have a good try at getting it running before I did much else. Just run a bit of fuel hose from a gallon petrol can and turn it over to see what happens. My silver rat look car hadn't run since '86 but still fired up. I have changed the oil now though!!
