R180 diff stripdown

I have an R180 and need to remove the quaife from it to go in another diff. I have stripped the R200 before, which is really easy, but I'm struggling to get the diff out of the R180 case. It just doesn't seam to fit out of the back. The side covers are removed and I've taken one of the side bearings off to give me more room the turn the unit but there just doesn't seam to be enough space for the unit to come out!! Please help as I'm now considering cutting the case in half with a grinder.

As a side thought, if you've got the diff in there, all the metal flying about from an angle grinder won't do it many favours:eek:

I was joking about the grinder :)

It must come out but I'm just struggling to work out what I'm doing wrong.

I notice you have a 3.3 for sale but do you have any other ratio's?

I will answer your question with a question...........why do you think I have only listed one ratio in an advert selling R180 diffs?????

I know its a difficult one ....

It looks pretty tight in the drawing and the service manual says "Extract differential case from carrier using slide hammer".
So I would guess that means pull it straight back!

Thanks Mark. The diff is wider than the rear opening so I'm guessing it must turn in order for it to come out. It will turn to the point where it very nearly comes out then runs out of room. On the R200 you just remove the 2 caps and the diff just comes out of the back. The R180 is a totally different design and the unit is held in place by 2 side plates. Once these are removed the diff is free to move around.

That is an excerpt from the manual regarding the R180 not the R200 which seems to be a simpler affair.
I don't know if you have a copy of the FSM handy to look at the drawing.
If you can pull that bearing in the photo then swing it back in to its original position it looks like it will come out straight back (with some persuasion).

That s my next option but having recently seen a R180 stripped and the bearings still on the diff unit I'm convinced it will come out with them on.

I don't have the FSM.

Just downloaded the FSM and unfortunately it doesn't help in how to remove the carrier. It mentions using a puller to get the side plates off, which was easy with just a screwdriver, but only say "Extract differential case from carrier". As it doesn't mention any issues with doing so and looking at the shape of the original diff section, I can only assume the issue may be that the Quaife is larger than the old diff and has to be split before it comes out of the body. I did try to split it by removing the allen bolts but they wouldn't budge. Even with an impact wrench.

Just spoken to Quaife who confirm that the unit should come out in one piece but it is very very tight in the body and may require some persuasion.
