Clutch and light weight flywheel options

Using our search function I couldn't find a whole lot of info on this topic but pretty sure it's been done to death in the past, so help me out with advice or point me in the right direction please:

Post engine rebuild I want a rev happier car, so looking at light weight options (I've written off the idea of getting one lightened - I remember a thread about the challenges and potential dangers thereof).

Keen to hear what clutch and flywheel combo you are using or would recommend.

One option is this flywheel with a Kevlar Stage 1 clutch which I'm told is bullet proof (literally!!) and I'll never wear it out with my usage, but it does come in at an eye watering $700+import duties!

I assume that's a stock clutch with it but at half the price I can go with it and test out how well the clutch goes. I understand Exedy is a large supplier in Japan and has a pretty good name, right?

Pretty sure the club "strippers" / racers are using something more than stock but I'm after something tough yet everyday traffic drivable too.

Do we know of more local suppliers of such parts?

Any thoughts or recommendations gratefully received and absorbed!

I brought a Kenmari one from RHD in Japan and i'm very happy with it, my car still needs to go on the dyno though to get the jetting right , but the rev's pick up alot quicker than a standard flywheel, I have also got an exhaust from sean on there, polished and ported head,forged pistons,rods,cam, triple DCOE etc

As a side note, that sounds like A great engine. Any more details? How does it feel?

Exedy 240mm clutch as illustrated currently in stock (also 225mm 240Z version).
Good name, reliable everyday use.

I wouldn't spend your money there, there's a UK company that makes them new, I can't remember off hand(sean knows). Would be massivlely cheaper.

How high are you planning of revving your new engine?

Firstly, do you want a 225mm or 240mm clutch (and therefore flywheel) ?

What use will determine what clutch plate type.

240mm flywheel and let's assume revving to 6kRPM but not regularly.

The reasons I started to consider a stage 1 clutch are: 1. Another member has he Cali Datsun flywheel and clutch on an L28 and is very pleased. 2. My stock clutch with smokey engine with less power / torque than it will have when rebuilt has a couple of times slipped between gear changes on a spirited drive and lwhen it warm up. I suspect it's more to do with my hooligan DNA than the quality / fit of the clutch.

The PO replaced it under 5000 miles ago. I don't know if the flywheel was resurfaced or not but regardless I figured while things are out and being refreshed, I may as well put in something I never need to think about again.

I'd hope just 6000rpm will be quite regualr :D



Ha! You know my driving style. At the moment anything over 5.5k just makes noise and smoke with no real gain but hopefully with a fresh set of pistons/ rings and a livelier cam the engine will be more willing to 6K.

set your sights higher Ali :) , 7k should easily be in scope for a 1/2 decent engine.

Funny Jon! I'm not sure I have the heart to do that to an old lady on a regular basis ;)

Franky, I leave those heady heights to people with deep pockets and lightweight forged pistons / rods!

Pick up a stage 2 or 3 clutch from ebay.uk
TTV Racing for the flywheel.

Or buy a combined kit from the States (check ebay.com first for prices and even maybe find the same product on their own website for less).

Sir, I respectfully refer to your last genuflection and should be grateful if you might carefully consider that the maximum speed is secondary to our wants and needs, more importanly, one should cruise at a rate of knots more gentle on the engine and thereby augmenting its durability.

Putting it another way - I'd rather cruise at 110mph at 3000rpm than 4000 !
