Plastic Re-chroming

I think pmac's 1 became my 2.

Indeed.
I have sold my set to Johny.

Ah, Ok then in that case;

JK240 (myself) 2 Pairs
Candy Red 2 Pairs
Status 1 Pair
Jonbills 1 Pair
JonnyMD 2 Pairs
Andrew Muir 1 Pair
Dale 2 Pairs
Cosworth415 2 Pairs
Ian 1 pair

Making 14 pairs/28 items which is spot on in terms of numbers. I heard back too from QPP and they have confirmed again that the parts would be stripped of the old chrome then start from fresh building up layers to the chrome. They also said that once plated it would be difficult to know whose was whose and they where thinking about that. IMO though if they are all the same part, of the same finished quality it shouldn't really matter should it?

It seems though that they don't have a jig suitable for our parts currently so are working on that too and will let me know once they have some more news, I am guessing that this will all happen in January now though with the proximity to Christmas, etc.

I'll let you guys know more when I do.

Cheers,

JK

Hi JK count me in although 2+2 ones may be slightly different?

Andrew, i believe the actual light lenses and surrounds are the same as on the 2 seater, it's just the main base/back piece that is longer/wider on the 2+2

Thanks guys will keep you informed with numbers and let you know if we either get enough interest to make it cost effective to do a second batch or anyone drops out, cheers
Hi
JK240 is possible stripping and re chrome some hood plastic emblems ?
Sorry, I doubt if there would be enough interest in this to get your badges done, this is purely rear lamp surrounds.

I've just had another email back from QPP and it's buggered the whole thing.

It states;

Sadly we do not have any jigs suitable to run your parts on, therefore in order to proceed we would need new tooling. This would be £1850 for a set of jigs

So even with 14 of us involved that adds £132.00 each to the original quoted price, so sorry guys it looks like the hunt for getting these things re-chromed goes on :(

Cheers,

JK

That is still a good price believe it or not if the quality is as good as I got back from the states when I had mine done over there,I'm still up for it if others are

I think at nearly 200 quid for each of us if we still had the batch of 28, it might be just a bit too much. And if anyone does drop out that reduces the number which just increases the price yet more for the rest of us

I will keep trying though there must be someone out there that does this sort of thing without it costing a fortune.

Cheers,

JK

That's my point,it does cost a fortune to have done properly and it's finding someone,as I said earlier the correct process is vacuum plating,I will have a punt around myself and see if I can come up with something

Expensive yes, but surely once the tooling is set up, we/you/the club effectively own it, so no one else can use it, correct?

Therefore we/the club, become the go to place in the UK, Europe even, for this sort of thing.

Plus, paid up members of said club, could get their surrounds done at cost + minimal arrangement fee for the club coffers, others/non members pay an additional fee on top also to go to club coffers?! :)

Just as an alternative solution, I got the plastic strips which run along the inside of the door panels re-chromed using this company: http://www.chromespray.co.uk/

It's a spray as opposed to a conventional chroming process but the results were really good

Non members might as well get it done off their own backs if they have to pay a bit extra for not being members

I've looked for a long time at having my plastic rear tail light surrounds re-chromed somehow and I know its been discussed on here several times in the past with no outcome.

Anyway, I spoke to a conventional re-chromer at the NEC over the weekend who gave me the name of a company who do this sort of this thing, I emailed them to see if it was something that could be done for individuals like myself and it turns out they can.

http://www.qppltd.co.uk/

The downside is the set up cost is £150 + VAT, so as I'm not VAT registered that's £180 for a pair of lamp surrounds, which is a bit steep, however it's the same cost even if there are ten pairs of surrounds, I have to let them know the size tomorrow so they can work out how many fit on the fixture to go through their plant and they will let me know how many I can get for the £150 fee.

So potentially this could work out as a cost effective way of getting a batch done as a club offer and I'd just like to know if there is anyone else who's interested in having this done.

Cheers,

Chased this up JK and the reception lady said this isn't something they are able to do so sounds like they have had a change of mind.

Only had one response from one other person and it's in excess of £500.00 per pair !
