Back from the blast shop...

Finally got the car back from the blast shop today, they've done a great job of removing all the old rubbish. Quite a lot of work ahead of me, most of the areas I feared would be rotten haven't disappointed, rear wings are rotten, rear valance and slam panel too, sills are ok but are repairs on top of old sills so I'll replace these. The front chassis rails and inner wings are rotten around the cross member mounts and need an amount of work. Floors need work too.
I've attached a few pics of it straight back from the shop.

2009 I think for the rear wings and sills, its had door panel / rear 1/4 panel damage in the 1980s and rough patching to the inner wings in the early 90s.
I have some old photos from the garage that did it last time, if it were my work I'd not have photographed it! That's part of the reason for the refresh, I knew what lay beneath and that it could be better.

looks good compared to mine ,I don't have as many holes as you but have a lot of similar repairs think the same person must have done them :rofl:most of mine is very solid but the repairs look shocking  Good luck with your look forward to seeing you progress as mine is slow :(

I seem to be having an issue with my replacement floor pans not fitting as I believe they should so in the meantime I've decided to crack on with all the holes around the scuttle panel, wind screen lower edge and bulkhead.
I forgot to take a before picture, but the front corners of the scuttle panel on both sides have rotted out, I was going to fully remove the panel but in the end it didn't seem necessary for two small areas of corrosion. I cut out the rot to find a further brace underneath, this had rotted through completely too, so this got cut out and remade. I've attached a few pics of these repairs and a few areas round the windscreen frame. Generally pleased with progress so far....

Progress on the bulkhead / steering column support plate. Bulkhead was rotted out around the plate, all rust cut out and new steel added. Few pics attached...

Getting there! Lots of hard work ahead but the metal work for me is the most enjoyable...although I cheated this time round and sorted myself a rust free shell as the cost vs time didn't add up and I missed not having one on the road!

Good luck!

Air Duct repairs

Just had an enjoyable afternoon sorting out the driver side air duct. It was rotted out on top but amazingly rust free once inside! I painted as much as I could inside with POR15, but reckon it'll need Schultz or similar for a proper job. All fresh metal is Zintec sheet, great stuff for replacement panels and shouldn't corrode in the future.

Nice work there :thumbs:I'm just making a complete air tube for mine as there was lots of rusty metal inside mine as the previous repairs had just been welded onto rusting original airtube :(

That sounds like hard work, there's a load of subtle changes along the length. I also found some strengtheners in there that catch the wing support bits, have you found them too?
Respect for that, keep up the good work!!

I'm just using the attachment option in 'Go Advanced' that lets u add upto 10pics. Works fine, but they initially show up as small thumbnails until u click them. Be nice if they showed up large.

I find doing bodywork very satisfying. I've not done a lot over the years - awful, awful, chicken wire and filler bodges on my Hillman Hunter that I'll own up to - finances and lack of knowledge dictated that - to the castle sections and sills of an MGB in 1983 - through to today - but I still marvel at how good people are in their own garages at home. Fastastic.

It’s been a while since I posted, I’m finding that the odd couple of hrs snatched when you can delivers slow progress!
For the last couple of weeks I’ve been working on the radiator support frame / crossmember which looked incredibly rough right from the offset. I completely dropped it out of the shell to do the work, there’s quite an amount of spot spot welds to remove, some of which are a ****** to get at.
I also bought a spot welder to keep things looking original, what a tool!
I’ve attached a few pics of progress, so far really pleased with the results, the rear panel of the support has a number of pressings, I’ve never made a press tool before and what you can do with a jigsaw to make a die and a vice to do the pressing is surprising.
