JDM passenger foot rest... or is it?

I picked up this item the other day when I bought some other bits for my 280zx, but not sure exactly which car it would be for. I believe it is a JDM passenger foot rest off either a 240z or 260z?

I have seen aftermarket ones which are handed, so you can swap over the brackets to suit. This one looks original as the mounting brackets are not removable.

Could anyone give me a bit of info? I am guessing it is for a right hand drive? I note that it is missing the rubber grip on the straight bar.

PS: Sorry about the poor pic quality, it is so dull today...

Looks like a typical after-market part sold by AMCO - I have two of them here soon up for sale (with their rubber foot grips).

OK thanks for the comments. It does look like it has some age, hence it looked like an original item when I saw it. I think it must be for right hand drive only.

Now what to do with it? I could paint it and look for a piece of correct looking rubber, or just punt it as is.

Any suggestions???

There were also mounting brackets/doubler plates welded to the floors of cars that were intended recipients of the folding footrests. If you mount it to a car without these it will eventually mess the floor up...

Standard equipment on all 'Deluxe' models of Japanese market S30-series Zs, they were fitted to some models of SP/SR roadsters and they also made it onto a few RHD Export market RS30 and GRS30 models.

Thanks for the info Albrecht just what I was after. I think I will restore it, if I can find suitable rubber grip. Aftermarket ones look to be around $200 USD!

BTW does the rubber grip cover the complete circumference of the bar? I can't tell from the pics I have found online and the one I have, has only traces of the original rubber left.

Yes, all the way round. The *correct* type of ridged rubber is quite elusive though. Lots of 'close' off the shelf, but nothing exactly right. Because of the small circumference, the proprietary stuff tends to open up when wrapped around the bar...

I have been having a look at suitable rubber matting and have found something that looks about right, but having only a fragment (which is 3mm thick) of the original I can't really tell.

Would appreciate your opinion if that's OK? Note: The 3rd thumbnail has a section drawing with measurements.

Also...

http://www.woolies-trim.co.uk/p-1713-narrow-rib-rubber-matting.aspx

They may even be the same product, most of the ones I have looked at look pretty much the same.

Also... One of the coach bolts which hold the foot rest to the floor is bent with a damaged thread, so i was going to replace both with new stainless steel items. Do you think that black stainless steel replacements would be suitable, or just regular stainless steel? The heads on my original bolts are painted, so would do the same on the new ones.

I think I am getting obsessed with this... but, if I am going to refurb it I want it to be as good as possible. :smash:

Apologies, I am abroad at the moment and therefore a long way from my own cars, parts and data. When I get back I'll endeavour to give you some examples.

The ribs are too fine but Woolies is nearest.

OEM according to my measurements is 7 per inch (measured at 14 per 80mm).and it is 230mm long on the bar.

Cheers Sean that's really helpful thanks. Think you are right, Woolies did look closer at "8 pointed topped ribs per inch". Will await comments from Albrecht to see if he knows of anything closer.

Woolies are very good - they're about four miles from me. Somehow, the guy found a 99% matching roll of vinyl for my 944 headlining after a sunroof leak ruined the original. No idea how long it had been hiding away under other stuff - years he said. I think it was £40. 120cm x 4m or something ... beautiful. They're very helpful.

Yeh, I have heard good things about them in the past, but have never used them.

Could someone let me have the hole centres for the mounting of the footrest please? I just want to double check mine before stripping and refurbishing it. Cheers!

Quick update on footrest... I have now had the rubber matting through from Woolies. Their CAT No: 86-1. Not an exact match, but closest I could find, so should look about right. I am going to test glue the rubber matting onto a scrap bit of tube with a couple of different glues I have and see which works the best.

Also got some new stainless steel coach bolts, washers and nuts as one of the original ones was mangled and had a damaged thread. The footrest has now been stripped and primed, just need to rub it down and paint it black.

In answer to my own question, the hole centres are 280mm (thanks to Sean for info).

I think I have managed to track down a new old stock Nissan replacement rubber grip for the footrest.
There were no images with the item listing, so won't know for sure if I am correct until it arrives.

I will post up images and details when it arrives.
