Nice installation Dale!!! I did have a similar thought but tend to use my bins. I bet the cavity creates a nice sound box for the 6x9s!
I had a set of high end 6x9s in my Saxo on a custom (heavy) MDF shelf and they sounded terrible.
Transferred the same into my 16v Calibra, built another shelf of the same thickness - everyone thought I had a sub in there. Amazing the difference a solid cavity can make. Shows the Saxo was made of cornflake packets!
Took the panel off and you were right about the size. The existing speakers "look" the part but distort at moderate to high volumes with zero mid range. When I search on tinter the reviews unanimously say they're awful.

They must do as the speakers sound a lot better than they should; they were only about £30!
I wanted something fairly discrete myself so just knocked up some quick MDF panels the same size as the lids (which are safely stored away for when I need them again) and covered them in some carpet tiles. The boot carpet sits over until I want some music and I lift it back. To do it properly I should cut holes in the carpet and stick some 'grille' material into them. Seen that before, good positioning. I only foresee three challenges:
1. Metal there isn't too solid so you may have to add some sound deadening to get the best out of them.
2. Decent 6x9s and MDF are heavy and that weight is at the outer most part of your tailgate so you may find it won't stay up depending on how good your struts are.
3. Routing cables to them- it may be a little on the fiddly side and you will need to wrap them in spongy tape to avoid buzz.
But as I say, plenty of people have done it, so it's very doable!
I'm opting for decent side speakers combined with my small concealed sub, so will let you know how that sounds when they arrive and I fit them.

BTW, this is the sub under my passenger seat cannot recommend it highly enough!!! It fits perfectly, adds just the perfect amount of bass without being over powering and piece of cake to install.

Not wishing to put holes in my floor, I tie wrapped mine to the carpet and glued the carpet down firmly. Would recommend covering the bottom of the seat as it drops mess onto the woofer cone even with the grille.
The vol control lives under my ashtray. Sure you could shake the z with it and let the max power gang hear the sub bass mating call 3 cars away, but I find at 30-35% it's just a perfect "in-fill" of low down bass to make the weedy side speakers sound large and make bass lines flow over the exhaust note
It's got a nice high cut off on the LPF so it crosses over with the speakers beautifully.
I notice it's also up for £40 less than I paid - I want a second one for the garage now
