Gearbox rebuild

So my gearbox is in need of a good recon. It whirs in 1,2 and 3rd considerably and i want it putting right but, I dont have the foggiest of where to turn. I would consider buying a full unit but was looking more for a rebuild kit if they exist (?). I have the 5 speed gearbox in my 260.

Thanks in advance
Craig

Craig, IMO it's cheaper to source another gbox. but as with everything Z they are not easy to get hold of (especially with a known history and recommendation).

Mark Rayner might have a perfect 260z gearbox available very soon.

Mr.F will be able to order you all the bits to rebuild, have you considered an S14 box?

I would be very interested in that is there a way to contact if it does become available?

Yeah I thought that Mike would be able to help I thought I would check here also though for pretty much your same answer lol. No I wasnt aware of an S14 swap is it an easy conversion to do?

S30 gearbox synchros are now virtually impossible to obtain, but all bearings should be OK. Also, mainshaft nut has recently become unavailable...

It is when you purchase it as a kit as I did :). Comes supplied with modified prop shaft and gearbox mount bracket as well as bellhousing, so it really is plug and play. There's a few write ups if you wanted to go it alone and source all the parts. Works really well, quite a few people have done the swap. Mine will be available soon.

Hey George
Why are you selling up? Bigger things planned?

It'll be a UK 5-speed.

The seller is a well-known loon!

It would be a good source for a donor bellhousing for the S14 swap though (although you could use the one off your existing box).

You need to contact pmac and discuss with him the details of the S14 swap. He has a tame machine shop with the tooling and know-how to properly execute the bellhousing machining (the most critical part of the swap).

So even if the seller is a crackpot, as long as the gearbox is ok.... unless you are saying that that is doubtful.

It you can get it cheap, it is still worth a go IMO. Easier to swap a complete unit than faff about with all the bits, machining etc.

I wouldn't trust that tbh.

Trying to recon a original box is not for the faint hearted with (as Mike says) parts difficult/impossible to source, and at the end your still left with (IMHO) a pretty poor box.

The S14 swap is probably one of the top "mods" you can do to an S30 and is well discussed/documented from Australia to Asia, it replaces the standard fairly sloppy original unit with a much sturdier unit that feels like a proper sports car shift and will last for some considerable time even with an extra 150 hp through it, I (we) have done nearly 20 of these with good results all around.

The downside is
1. Its not the correct period box so if you’re on the concurs trail then it may not be for you.
2. Its not cheap and will end up between £800 - £1000 if you get someone to do it for you

The upside is
1. Excellent feel to the shift
2. Will handle bags of abuse, even a woman driver couldn’t break it
3. Will last probably longer than the car

The trick is to buy a good unit (occasionally you see ones that have clearly been abused but on the whole the majority are of serviceable quality with the occasional diamond, try to view it first, take someone who knows backlash or binding when they feel it, in the end Caveat Emptor

You can then open the case inspect it and either refit it or recondition it as the parts are readily available

Pay anywhere up to £350 for a unit (S14a is the best of all with the oil trapdoor but don’t worry if you can only source an S14, even an S13 will fit but the internals are not quite as well engineered.
Bell housing conversion £60-£100
New prop £250 (or cut and shut new end on existing prop £100-150)
Modified gearbox mount £50
Quick shifter £60 (gives very nice feel)

Fitted properly its almost undetectable unless you’re the driver.

I agree, a lovely box to use and nicely summarised by Skiddell.

Sometimes though it can be tricky to spot the right gearbox so be prepared that you may end up having to spend more to get the box right, eg.. new bearings.

Will have to keep an eye on your eBay pages...:D

I'll third what Skidell says too, best thing I did was the S14a box conversion, and I went short shift too.

thanks for the check list Skiddell. I don't mind paying that if i know its gonna be solid in the end. By the sounds of it it will be so, just need to start sourcing the parts and somewhere to actually do it for me as I dont have the room to be able to attempt it.
