S30 fuel sender adjustment - experiences?

I think I have a kind of opposite problem to this thread (but related). I was reading empty on the dial this morning and nervously took an 11 mile run to a station not knowing in the slightest how accurate the old gauge is. I filled up and managed to squeeze 44 litres in (9.5 gallons) and now it is reading full.

So for me it seems as though the gauge is good at the top (full) end, but is out of whack when things get low. How large is the tank capacity - I think I read 60 or 65 litres somewhere sometime

Hi bluejon, I also have the same probs as you sometimes it reads full when I fill up other times it reads empty when I know that there is sufficient fuel in.I just keep on filling whenever I go out now. I did take out the sender once but when I filled the tank,after I flooded the fourcourt of the petrol station I realised that I had not centered the seal on the fuel sender.Very,very embarrassing.Hope you sort it soon. Tony.

My fuel gauge has always worked fine until recently, when it stopped moving at all,
even though i know for sure theres plenty of fuel in the tank.

So diving under the rear end, the two connections to the fuel sender were filthy and corroded,
the rubber covers have long since turned brittle and slipped down the wires, leaving the connections exposed.

I connected the wires together and the gauge did move, slowly, to empty!

I cleaned up the connections on the wires and on the sender, with fine sand paper,
spray with electrical contact cleaner and voila, it now works as before :D

I would suggest that at the very least you try cleaning everything up first, you may be suprised that it could be all that's required ;)

Hi all.Just to add a little further to the fun and games w all seem to be having with our fuel sender units and fuel gauge. I have just fitted a new fuel sender unit from the states and a second hand gauge also from the states and they seem to be working ok for the moment. This way is not cheap,what with customs,vat and postage and all that jazz it is bloody expensive. On the other hand if you want it to work correctly it may be the only way to go.
