370Z Oil Temp

I went away for a few days this week and one of the places I visited was Porlock. On one very narrow and hilly lane (Porlock Weir to Lynmouth toll road) my oil temp rose to 106C. It usually hovers around 90C so it caught my attention. The water temp was ok and the fans never kicked in.

However on one slow uphill climb the throttle response was reduced. It appeared for a few seconds that the ECU was limiting my power.

I've heard that racing 370Zs have had problems when on track from this power cutting feature at high temps. I've since done a search and found reference to high oil temps on the 370.

Is 106C considered to be high? I don't have an oil temp gauge on my 240 - I judge the oil temp by my oil pressure

By the way a 370Z does not have an oil cooler for UK markets :smash: edit - see later post

Hi Rob
with modern synthetics it shouldn't cause a problem.
when using the Aston with sumpguard fitted we sometimes see oil temps at 115C, for short periods but have had no wear issues.
cheers

I think 82 deg C to 100 deg C is an acceptable range. Too low reduces running efficiency; much higher will put too much stress on the cooling system.

The UK 370Z has got an oil cooler - it is a water to oil exchanger sandwiched between the oil filter and the block...easily updated to a front mounted oil to air exchanger system.

Thanks Brian and Mike. Mike I can't see the oil filter never mind a sandwich plate - I need to crawl under the car and even then it's all covered up! Bit different than the 240!

I'll check it out sometime.

Anyway as a last resort I consulted the nice shiny Owners Manual .

If the engine oil temperature gauge indicates more than 140C while driving, reduce the engine speed (RPM) and drive at a slow speed. When the engine oil temperature is high, the engine protection mode, which helps reduce the chance of engine damage, could activate and automatically decrease engine power.

I was driving slowly (behind lots of pheasants).

140C blimey  , anyway seems like it can tolerate getting a lot hotter than my 106C - 'engine protection mode' did kick-in for a few seconds though. Bit clever these modern cars aren't they

Is the Nissan dealer that does your serviceing using a decent synthetic oil or, the same cheap stuff they put in the rest of the range?

racer (those were the days ;) ), Yep it's always had fully synthetic and actually I serviced it recently and spent a small fortune ;) on Mobil 1.

It has a Micra oil filter though! Same part (so the dealer tells me), it's tiny compared to a 240Z filter.

The issue I had which prompted this Thread has only happened that once. I think the racing 370s had the same issue at first. The car is too clever!

I keep saying I'll treat myself to an oil cooler - maybe this year! It's one of the reasons I've still not tracked the car. I must sort that out too!
