Dashcams

What are people's thoughts on these?

About 18 months ago I had a guy reverse into me at some lights (lane was blocked ahead and he wanted to get round it and needed more room) no damage but my insurance was notified of a claim that I'd driven into him. Luckily I had the dashcam footage to prove it.

Since then I've put them in all my cars, including the mrs one as well (I have a great bit of footage of her being an idiot and moving into a lane packed with ice everyone was keeping out of, and spinning her little Peugeot - luckily she was fine and didn't hit anything). But now I'm considering putting them in the Z...

I know people like to keep their cars original but is the extra security worth it? After all the good ones do act as an alarm camera etc as well if anything is stolen or broken into whilst parked and back the videos up in the cloud. And if anything does happen you have evidence of idiots on the road.

Is it worth considering them in a classic car? Or is that blasphemy...

I use the Blackview series - specifically the DR650S-2CH with cloud and parking modes on my daily driver

It all depends on whether or not they're ever needed! if you had a minor incident as you did - it was invaluable I bet.

If it's not too obvious I can't see any reason why not. All these installations are reversible.

I run a very basic one with a revolving recording in my work van (the most miles I'll ever do in a year in a vehicule) - so many idiots on the road doing stupid stunts and I didn't see why I or my company should pay for someone else's antics.

They can do, but the trick is the wiring. In my other cars they are hard wired into the fuse box - I'm not sure if this is even possible on a Z yet, but don't want to be using the cigarette lighter to power things.

Nothing wrong with the ciggie lighter if :

a) the car has been rewired or checked
b) you plug it via a multiprise with in-line fuse

I was more thinking that it's easy to disconnect or use for something else and forget and cables get in the way - practicalities rather than safety!!

That made me chuckle. I'm only guessing but I think most people who drive these cars get by quite well without an iphone -what is a coyote? - gps anywhere near the car!

Mine hasn't even got a cigarette lighter in it!

What's a coyote? The wild animal? Not letting that near my Z.

Don't change my phone in the Z tbh - and I carry round one of those 20,000mah batteries that packs enough of a punch to jumpstart the car if needed. Got one in each motor to be on the safe side, and as a plus it can charge my phone or other device when needed.
