Spent another day playing zeds, although half off it was mocking up a Yamaha R1 V8 with my mate and trying to come up with ideas on how to route the exhaust. Not much success though. With fresh knowledge of SU's I was confident a check and rebuild of both carbs would fix the running issue but it didn't. Found a few interesting things that I was confident would be the problem. One of the jet was jammed solid in the carb so turning the adjuster at the bottom did nothing. When I did get it to more and then free up I found it would not go all the way to the bridge. Eventually I found it was 3mm too short!! so I replaced it with a spare. Checked the float levels and adjusted the jet heights on both carbs but just couldn't get it to start. Engine runs really nice on easy start but only just ticks over on petrol. So to sum up, as I'm open to any suggestion:

There's fuel at the jet as if I take the jet out and hold it below the float chamber, fuel come out. Pistons move freely and drop to the bottom as they should. When you wind the jet up it stops level with the bridge. Wound it down 2 turns. Spark and timing fine as it runs well on easy start. What am I missing?

Anyway, gave up and jetwashed the underside of the car and engine bay.

Did you change the fuel filter already? Do you have a fuel pressure meter you can put on it?
Maybe sticking needle valves in the carbs, maybe the float level too low.

I've put a fuel filter on it. Not checked the pressure. I've checked the float level by removing the top and piston off the carbs and looking down the jet assembly to see how high the fuel level is in the tube. Not sure if this is the correct way but it seamed the easy way to check it. I would think fuel pressure wouldn't be an issue as long as the fuel bowls are full it will run without a pump for a short while.

I will take the fuel bowls apart and check the valves.

Thanks.

John, just keep an open mind i.e. you might be chasing a fuel issue when it's something else.

I did that once - my VW camper broke down and a few days beforehand I'd done a lot of work on the carbs (twin carb version). I dismantled the carbs at the side of the road and couldn't find the fault. Walked home with my wife and baby. Went back later with my neighbour when it was dark and found the fault - knackered distributor cap (tracking inside). Learnt a lesson from that (next time I had an ignition fault I looked at the carbs first ).

From your previous posts it seems that the car has been 'messed with' a bit so it could be something wild like the cam a tooth out. I know you said it ran ok on Easy Start but how 'ok'?

Anyway you are more than capable of sorting it.

It run very nice on easy start Rob which is why I discounted ignition. I do like to step back for a while though which is why I've asked for any advice. I've always believed brainstorming to be a superb method of eventually arriving at a solution. I listen to everything people have to say as the solution or the pointer towards the solution can could come from anyone.
