Spoke with a car electronics chap last week - he had a tracker in his van which got nicked and they never found a trace of it - beacon never set off. He checked up and these people load up the car and go over it with a sensor or something to detect the signal being emitted. They found his, removed it and off they went.

Such tracker devices can now easily be added to your pride and joy as they are so small and cheap without you realising it a show or meet, and hey presto - the scum know where you live.....

The van full of his equipment - I think they merely destroyed the tracker between the point where they stole it and loading it onto a flatbed down the road.

Thanks for all of the input and responses so far, interesting to hear whats out there and available. I must admit I do quite like the idea of a tracker even if it is quite a costly addition.

I suppose ultimately and sadly if someone really wants to nick it then they will find a way and do it regardless of the measures taken. It would be good to have some deterrents in place though.

I thought the TK103 tracker type thing pretty affordable: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/302068213800
I think I might well get one.

Get yourself a pay as as you go SIM with the TK103, setup an online account with the telecom service provider so that you can top up whenever needed and you'll be good to go.

Don't forget to get the tracker to respond to your mobile with a message, to keep the SIM card 'active' as your not making phone calls. As the service provider normally will terminate after 3 months of dormant use!

Lots of useful info online and I think the TK103 has been upgraded with another model since I bought one, not sure now.

Clever these tracker devices, they also have a movement sensor so if anybody tries to lift the car on a flatbed or even move the pride and joy, you will be notified immediately!

Supposing that you travel abroad with your car and this fitted - it should still operate as if in the UK - right ?
So, it should also be applicable for a permanent fitting within, say, France with a French SIM card ?

Use mine abroad all the time. Most if not all pay as you go SIM allow roaming abroad and data access. Though worth checking with service providers for sure.
