Anyone fitted a S14 box?

Is it a nice box and is it a smooth drive?

Any issues with the ratios for a a standard 260Z?

Thanks,

Stee

Steve,

When i first fitted mine I loved it, I didn't even notice the whine in top gear. The box has got progressively worse, one of the syncros has gone, gear changing is notchy, and now she is coming out this winter for a rebuild - I've put less than 100 miles on her and I've used the best Nano Technologically advanced transmission oil known to man, which as you guessed isnt cheap!

Moral of the story, whatever you go for, get it checked over before you install it. Will save you the hassle of having to pull her out again - not particularly hard if you are into DIY but not the most pleasant job to do twice.

Ok here is another opinion.

I have fitted these and given them a hard life. Great boxes, lovely quick change even as standard (no quick shift).

Personally I have given the boxes a look over for obvious damage and also made sure I can select gears before splitting the case but I've taken a gamble on the condition and been lucky. They can tend to give a slight whine in top at about 50mph in my experience, but then also from my experience Z boxes can do that too. However that's being used in a track car with no soundproofing whatsoever.

If you strip a box down you need to know what you are doing and you are bound to spend on it.

Tel, how was I supposed to hear a gearbox whine over that exhaust/induction noise and all your phone calls?

There's a very detailed thread on it somewhere, I'll try to find it. Basically its quite simple.

Pete and I have done about 13 or 14 or these and George’s appears to be one of the few with issues (the gearbox that is) with any second-hand kit there is an element of luck of the draw, a visual inspection can only tell you so much and to do a full strip down inspection and measure tolerances will cost more that the box is worth (second hand) so there is always an element of "suck it and see" these boxes are at least 12 years old and from a car variant well known by the boost brigade/drift fraternity so many boxes are toast before they come off the donor car.

Firstly you need the right bell housing as there are at least four variants some with the reverse switch hole in the right place some without. Some people grind a new notch on the reverse rod, not sure I like that one.

Getting the bell housing modified looks easy but get the clearance around the bearing wrong and you load the bearing which leads to a whine when the box is assembled, also you need to make sure that the reverse selector rod hole is clearance’d otherwise re-assembly is a no go.

The speedo drive will cause you grief as there are several variants that work in limited capacity.

Installation is easy as long as you don't screw up the angle of the prop shaft when modifying the support brace.

The conversion changes relative positions so the existing prop shaft won’t work, you will need to answer the question “shall I have a new prop made or will a cut and shut do” only you can answer that.

You can also move to a quick shift kit (little money from fleabay) these make a huge difference some like them others don’t some people are just too cheap to go buy one, each to their own.

This is all from an experienced engineer, throw in the "well-meaning amateur" factor and its anyone’s game.

I have had one of Steve's and Pete's boxes on my 280ZX and it has been a delight to have on it Slight problem with speedo but nothing major
Best thing I ever did Big thumbs to them both
Also know Paul Wrangle has had one of them on his 260 and he also is delighted with it

I've driven Steve's own car with the conversion and, I can confirm it's a great Box.
I believe spares for these boxes are still plentiful and realively cheap also.
