Take a second to look at this pic :)

http://i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz144/mark_z31/ZXWIDE2.jpg

now in my personal opinion, i think this 240z? looks stunning, infact im thinking the z31 is pretty much the same shape right? just longer and a little wider?

ok il get to the point.

basicly, im thinking of getting a set of 240z or 260z headlights and surrounds and maybe seeing if i can intergrate them into my z31. sounds nutty i know but i just love the look of the 240z etc, fantastic looking cars.my car is in a project state at the moment so what better time to maybe think about mods right? the only thing that would maybe worry me is sale-ability if i ever decided to part with her.

i would be very interested to hear your thoughts about this, its just an idea im playing with.
the z31 is a nice looking car stock but surley if you like parts on other models you can intergrate to get the car how you want it? a personal touch, a custom one off

You're referring to the yellow one right ? Those are ZG light surrounds and covers - not cheap.

mark, not sure if that first picture helps.
like sean states, the first pic has a yellow 'g nose' and the second 'hybrid' pic is the standard s30 front end.
i might be talking ******** and completely missing the point.
i've just woke up.!!

not sure what sean is talking about. these zg lamp covers can be bought for peanuts. ;)

That's a 280ZX (S130)........with some fat rear arches and other body add-ons.

and the yellow one isn't a ZG.

is that a standard s130 front bumper with a z31 splitter?

Not a Z31 splitter. The early turbo ones were similar but didn't stick out forwards as much.

yup, that looks spot on

so is there anyone who has done this conversion? or anyone know of one? or would it be a disgusting inbred?

Don't know of anyone doing it over here, but popular in the US. You can still get the kits I believe Mike Feeney (Mr.F) can, also I have a link to an old website

LINK (http://www.spoilersetc.net/Default.htm)

That used to do them. Dunno if they deliver to the UK though or are still in business.

Mr.F 's website is here LINK (http://www.mjpshop.co.uk/category.php?id=97)

Mr.F can get them for 175 according to his website

In order of your photo's.
1:
2 gold Z32's (left and right hand side)
1 Gold 280Z (in the middle)
1 Yellow 260Z (I think at the top)

2:
200SX (S13) with a 280Z lookalike conversion on the nose)

so my question is, would the 280Z lookalike conversion look right on a z31?

Just to clear this up because there still seams to be some confusion. The Gold car in the middle is a 280ZX and not a 280Z.

Either/or ... the important bit is the 280 part

Sorry.

Lol ... no probs

I suppose a conversion of the Z31 to look like a 280ZX would be ok ... but I don't really see the point. I would just get myself a 280ZX. they are both almost exactly the same on the inside (ok some differences but both share a similar dash, targa roof, similar seating position, similar size etc) The major different is the 300ZX is a 3 litre V6 whereas the 280ZX is a 2.8 straight 6. For me the factors to take into account would be:

1: The look of the front end. The scooped headlights is very retro and aggressive on the 280ZX, the sleepy eyed look of the 300ZX reminds me of a monster to be unleashed.
2: The handling on the later 300ZX's is better at a stock level but can be sorted easily by upgrading the 280ZX with relative ease.
3: The later facelift 300ZX's didn't tend to rot anyway near as bad as early 'Z' cars
4: The 280ZX isn't quite as powerful as the equivalent 300ZX ... however both are very easy to mod and produce enormouse power gains ... if you spend the right money.

Personally I am biased towards the 300ZX (I have one)... however I have always loved the 240/260/280 and its aggressive looks .... Just remember they all sound wonderful when on full tap :D

thats a very good case you have put across and very valued, thanks!

ive been thinking alot about my z and have been looking at several possibilitys for her :

1.) keep her stock
2.) add a subtle bodykit
3.) strip her for drifting and track days
4.) turn her into a hybrid

as for number 3, i dont think thats going to happen, i dont want her to be used and abused.

the hybrid option sounds good, i would get an original z31 at the end and people will wonder what the heck it is lol

there are alot of ideas on the net, for instance, some people shave the rear bumper, looks rather good! twin round lights in place of the rectangle ones, again looks nice.
theres an american 240z / zx ( i think )which has a huge wide body, big wing and afterburner lights, now the rear end with the afterburner lights looks amazing! if you havent seen it, i can post up pics.

if i leave the front of my z31 alone, with just a nice splitter and or lip, i may well go for the afterburner lights and make the rear end flush. im very handy with a welder, fabricating and im pretty good at filling so it could be done :)

Out of all the examples I have to say I do kind of like the shaved rear ended Z31, but as Mr Ex also says I much prefer the "leave as is" attitude. I get a lot of appreciation for my Z31. Its rare enough to be unusual enough to make most people look again. Combined with a characteristic sound of the V6 burble it stands out enough in the crowd. Admittedley we all like to add our own touch to our cars to give them all a certain something special, but my touches are almost always along a subtle way. I will be posting a new thread on an engine rebuild I am doing. Hopefully it will finish up with all the engine bay looking nice and neat, with little touches like painting the inlet manifolds, new hoses etc etc. All of which keeps things standard but when you look under the hood a definate presence of owners pride and individuality.

Shame you live so far from me. I would tap you up for some of that bodywork skills your talking about ... its one thing I lack and need lol

markz312+2turbo
22-10-2009, 12:06 AM
rhanaga ---> i cant wait for you to start that thread! i have to do it myself so i might get some sneeky idea's.lol

as for the body work repairs, yours cant be as bad as mine was surley? :( and if i lived closer, id have no problems giving a fellow z owner a hand :)

i totally agree with you and MR EX, they are rare enough to raise eybrows and as standard they are very nice cars. that said, im a very indecisive person, which is a pain in the ass! i will probably end up leaving her stck and make no changes until in 110% sure about what i want to do.

nah mine aint bad ... just some rot at the bottom of the rear wheel arches behind the wheel. One isn't too bad but both areas need cutting out and patching/painting. i don't know anyone who can do it for mates rates and bodywork always costs money to get right.

BTW ... thread started :D
