Throttle bodys will give you the best control of fuelling and ignition (limited only by the amount of dyno time you pay for) but will require a lot of additional components/costs to get them working. I'm guessing the initial costs will be at least a few thousand but will then be easier to have tuned in the future.

Carbs can be jetted to get as near as possible for a small amount of money but you need to find a dyno that are good at this type of thing. I would probably check out your local dynos by taking the car in and having a chat about if it's the sort of thing they are used to doing. Talk to as many as possible and you should get a feeling as to which is best for your situation.

There is a company I use called AT Speed in rayliegh. They are a father and sons team with the dad dealing with carbs and the sons looking after the ecu controlled stuff. They did a great job on my l series and now look after my 1jz powered z.

Aftermarket TB's are based around a "replacement" bolt pattern, replacing webers etc otherwise they would not be an effective alternative.

So what do you classify as modern? Would you consider a L28turbo swap from a 280ZX as modern or in period ?

If in period, then in the last year of the 280 the Z31 was introduced and that came with a VG30. And so would also consider a VG30 to be in period ??

Can you see a pattern developing here..

BTW I can totally understand the motion that if its not "L" series, then its not your cuppa

Throttle bodies are not a modern performance enhancement, they've been available since the 70s. I believe the works cars had a system running mechanical fuel injection.

Speed Shop Shinohara, the makers of the Devil Z, also had HKS throttle bodies fitted to the Devil Z in the 80s.

If its driveability you are after then TBD's are the way to go. No real difference in power between TBD's and a good set of triple carbs. As stated earlier in this thread carbs will be a fraction of the cost and a lot easier to fix if they should go wrong.

I have a set of triple 45DHLA's for sale which are set up for a well tuned 2.8. PM me if you are interested. Only reason I'm selling is I need a set of 48's for my upcoming engine build
