So I wangled it so that I spent a night at Lorient which gave me enough time to visit the submarine pens !

Interesting facts :

The Nazis constructed electricity power-lines running across France from the Saar region to Brest, Lorient and La Rochelle to charge the batteries of their submarines. The pylons are still used today !

Lorient was one of the last Nazi hold-outs in occupied Europe and also Germany - the garrison surrenderd two days after VE day on the 10th May - they could have held out longer but a deal was done whereby further loss of civilian life (and later retribution) was avoided. In true Harris fashion, Lorient was wiped off the map in the RAFs attempts to destroy the bunkers - fat chance when you look at the photos !

Maintenance was the key and a quick turnaround, especially for damaged U-boats.

So they had a system whereby U-boats piloted into the single hanger, were winched up onto a cradle then a rail system positioned them in front of a repair bay (just like Halfords) and in it slid. Back to sea was a reversal of the process. Actual exposure to enemy (ours) aircraft was limited to 1/2hr and their air-raid waring system was enough to warn them well in advance !

The outer building housed those ready for sea or in preperation. Bloody efficient the huns !

Oh, and a five metre hole that I had dug to see the quality of soil beneath and what to do with it !

Just following on and filling up the ether.......:

May7
At 0241 German General Jodl signs an instrument of unconditional surrender at General Eisenhower’s headquarters in a Reims schoolhouse.
General Francois Sevez signs for France. General Fahrmbacher agrees to surrender the German pockets around Lorient and St.Nazaire to General Kramer of the U.S. Army 66th Division.
Allied entry into the Lorient and St.Nazaire pockets is delayed 3 days to allow Germans to mark the minefields.

May 8

The Soviets stage a second surrender ceremony in Berlin. Marshal de Lattre de Tassigny represents France at the ceremony.
May 9

The German garrison surrenders the La Rochelle/La Pallice pocket to the French 23rd Infantry Division.
May10

The French 19th Infantry Division enters Lorient.
May11

Admiral Frisius surrenders the German garrison at Dunkerque to Czech troops.

The French 25th Infantry Division enters Saint Nazaire.

And so the ports of Saint Nazaire (another u-boat base), Lorient, La Rochelle and (surprisingly - given its' proximity to England) Dunkirk were never taken by the Allies !
