What did you do to your Z this week?

Side project - steering wheel resto for Dixie. Like the car in general, the wheel was in decent condition but cosmetically worn out. I stripped the remains of the original finish off the rim by washing in the kitchen sink with normal hot water/washing up liquid and a sponge with scouring pad. I then sanded the spokes with scotchbrite pads, wire wool and various wet and dry grades to get rid of surface rust and other imperfections to provide a sound base. I then primed and painted in satin black. Back to the rim, I stained it with a water-based red mahogany dye that I picked up off eBay to deepen the colour again. That where I'm at now, as pictured. I'm now waiting for a can of 2K urethane clear lacquer to arrive which I will finish the rim in. Picked up a decent spray mask today to keep the isocyanates at bay while doing that! It'll be done outside too, but safety first!

Rebuild every 10 years!

Looks pretty in a functional way. Any stickers in the box?

I know!! My 40 year old not quite as high spec one must still be doing something given my crank is still in one piece ;) and I've had her at 8k RPM about 4 times when I first bought the car with a randomly sticky throttle that caught me by surprise between gear changes!!!! Gulp!

Yes - a very large sticker.

Edit: just read up on SFI 18.1 I don't think even John Bills would have the heart to take his engine that far up the rev counter

What SFI 18.1 Certified Means

Section 18.1 refers to Crankshaft Hub Harmonic Dampers. Article 3.0 Construction, dictates that “the damper shall be constructed in such a manner that the inertia devices shall not become disengaged during use… For inertia disc style dampers, the containment device must cover a minimum of 50 percent of the cavity containing the disc. The thickness of the containment material must be a minimum of 0.062 inch steel or 0.180 inch aluminum.” Article 5.1.3 B Testing Procedure mandates that “The damper shall be driven to a rotational speed between 12,500 and 13,500 rpm and maintained at that level for one hour.” Furthermore, the steel of a SFI certified Fluidampr housing must meet a minimum 40,000psi yield strength and 60,000psi tensile strength under testing.

Interested to see how the wheel turns out with the lacquer on, Rich. Want to have a go at doing mine sometime. There's an intense satisfaction in doing these kind of jobs I think when it all turns out well ...

Just good for the soul.

Finally, after owning my car for 29 months I've got round to finishing off the small bit of welding needed to the floors. I'd done most of it but just this small bit needed to be finished. I'm not sure the carpet had ever been up as it was trapped under the bracket supporting the air con unit.

When I removed it I found a sticker showing the unit no. of the a/c unit ...

Also removed more interior vinyl before I do a recolouring job on the whole lot.

Continued getting the 280z ready for paint. Put the wings and cowls back on so I could get the spoiler and bumpers to fit. The usual cutting and remaking to the correct shape required. You would think that after the first part comes out of the mould and is found to be wrong, they would redo the mould to rectify it. Unfortunately not. Anyway got it fitted as best i could.

Then moved on to the blue car. I had silenced the wastgate so needed to test the boost control was still coping with the increased wastgate back pressure and all looked on. Had a bible at the nock control and took out some fueling at the top end to release a bit more power. Took a degree of timing out of number 2 cylinder and added some to a few of the others to even up the knock control duties. Car feels better and better all the time.

More of the same really, working on the interior ... removing some more old vinyl, which will be reused as it it's in superb nick for 45 years of age, it's just dirty ...

That sounds like a good day. I’ve spent the weekend playing with my throttle position & progression hole display, which lead me to move the 3rd progression hole nearer the 2nd to stop it going lean between them. Now it just goes lean after the 3rd :-/

That will be Dick Grandison with the white car. Penistone - my daughter lived there and it's a lovely place - think she'll move back one day.

Took the silver/rust car to "Classic's on the beech" at sunny southend-on-sea. It was a glorious day and proper T shirt weather. The turnout was superb with a great selection of cars from a DB2 and 1965 190sl to rat rods and campers.

To cover some marks in the front coin pocket of my console, I made up a small leatherette-covered panel which drops in nice and tight. Also did a matching one for the back, but won’t fit in position until the console is back in the car. All to be covered by the original armrest anyway, but gives me something to do in the dark evenings!

Had some time to get into the garage and do something I've been meaning to do for ages ... fix that damn dodgy, loose gearstick!

Bought the 'shifter bushing repair kit' from MSA yonks ago and fitted it tonight. Five-min job - no slack at all now ...
