Track-day tyres

Data rather than subjective opinion is key here
.....all this seasons Time Attack cars (using Trofeo R tyres) are breaking previous seasons lap records with them........previous seasons when tyres were free (anything on MSA list B was allowed)

Go figure[/QUOTE

No doubting your word and their performance but when scragging the last 100ths of a second just isn't important, why spend the extra on the last 5bhp and expensive tyres ?

Track-days for most of us is a few fun days out a year and if a set of tyres lasts two seasons - it's a bonus.

Then (by your own volition) just go buy some cheap Nankang never grips....after all

so it doesn't matter end of debate

You can't have it both ways Frenchie, :p

I want it all ways darling !

If I wanted no-grips, I buy a cheap set of remoulded road-tyres.

And it does matter - don't want to look a total ar*e out there being a diplomat for S30s !

I just don't want to spend more than £150 a tyre for what'll be 3-4 outings per year. Ideally <£100 per tyre per year - wear 'em out sticking each year and replace !

Appears complicated to find the right product and especially in the 'right' size !

225/45/15 medium = £119

Very reasonable.

225/45/16 Soft = £154

I think I've got the answer for you - buy those remoulds, and stick one of these on each

As mentioned we are using (have to as its a control tyre) the Trofeo R on our Time Attack car and once warm the grip is staggering, takes a couple of laps to warm up but seems to stay on song longer than the R888 which I felt went off quicker, the side wall allows just the right amount of roll off to get the tyre flat on the track but stiff enough to give a really good responsive steering feel

I have also used Pilot sports which were junk in comparison

Indeed. can have all the grip in the world but if its got no feel on the edge then it puts me off instantly. I like to know whats going on. I never got on with P Zeros, do you know what the difference is with Trofeos other than compound?

How long are you getting from a set of Trofeos btw on what usage?

In 14-15in and the size you need you will probably be fairly restricted by choice anyway.

There are 5 separate Pirelli P Zero tyres, including theTrofeo R according to Google
Pirelli P Zero
Pirelli P Zero Asimmetrico
Pirelli P Zero Nero
Pirelli P Zero Corsica
Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R
Various treads and probably compounds.
As Steve has already indicated we have to run the Trofeo in Time Attack so we have never looked at any other Pirelli.
We have just set about making the Trofeo work on the car. Sean at Pirelli Motorsport is present at most of the rounds and he has helped us in that process.Pressures, spring rates, suspension settings and type of suspension all play a part in setting up a car. There are no general "one setting fits all" answers.

Skiddell runs 245/45-16s.
No other size needed for us.
We did try some 225/50-16s on the car also but they were not as good (for Steves car)

Different cars and different drivers in different circumstances will need a different tyre solution.
So "tyres by internet discussion" will never give Sean the answer he wants.
It does fill up pages on the forum tho.:rofl:

Exactly Pete (thanks for your input), however I think for this "Sunday Schumacher", I can find a decent compromise between price, size, grip and wear....I remain foraging....:driving:

Well Sean, you got pretty much all the answers/choices here so really it is all down to the balance of budget and choice

Yep !

Firstly I think that I'm going to buy myself a set of 8x16 wheels which'll open a wider choice of tyre and I'll reduce the profile so that as a semi-slick, there'll be less 'roll' without harming the chassis.

I thank also those discreet heroes that have PM-ed me.

The bigger question is how hooked you will get into improving on track, very easy way to empty ones wallet

May I suggest a wee list summary of tyres and choices for anyone ready the thread in future? I know here isn't a one size fits all but quantify say, tyre, sizes, widths, profiles, car, power/weight, rough cost. Would be good to glean from the experienced heads here to see what's popular and what's not.

Will type up a starter when I get to a proper computer in the morning

TimeAttack folks, assuming you are running 240/260/280z's are you running same diameter, profiles and widths on both axles? What's the corner weights like?

TimeAttack folks,
There is currently only one S30 occasionally running in UK Time Attack
So maybe it should be "folk"???
There are however two people in the team, Steve n me so maybe we can be called "folks"???:D
We have already divulged what tyre and size is on the car atm.
That is public knowledge.....anyone can look at the car in the pits .
I doubt there will be any other S30s taking part anytime soon but just in case we are not willing to
divulge publicly any further information about the car and its settings.;)

Fair enough but the idea for the general user remains a good one :

Maybe more info will encourage others out on the tracks which wouldn't be a bad thing whether ins erious competition or just for fun - the more cars that are seen and seen to go well, the better the promotion of our cars which in turn never hurts !

Agreed.
Im more than willing to post up more subjective opinions like those already on the thread..:D

but maybe it might be an idea to post data up about tyres that members have actually used on an S30 variant on track??? That would rule me out .:smash:
And even restricting it to that wouldnt necessarily be 100% useful.

a) that would be appreciated and frankly, all our opinions are subjective as non of them are based upon any constants or backed up tested data.

b) I thought that was also the point - list what is available AND have feedback using those products.
