toyota Hilux/Peugeot 505 brake upgrade

The "fins" are there to aid cooling. They are designed to stop a 2+ton 4x4 in the worst possible conditions by the manufacturer. Using a little reasoning, a 1ish ton z should require a lot less energy to stop and therefore generate a lot less heat and so, not require as much cooling.

Just my take on it.

Knew it was a stupid question but hey at least the stupid person now knows the answer:flyingpig:

Good question Steve, I had very similar concerns but came to the same conclusion as Johny. ;)

So, doing a little research on this conversion and it seems to me that the first picture below shows an S13WB caliper and the second an S12W caliper!

The S13WB is slightly wider and heavier with bigger pistons and designed to take a brake disc of 26 to 28mm in width
the S12W caliper takes a 22mm disc.

The S13WB caliper obviously still fits but if you use a 22mm disc its possible that at the limits of wear on the pads
and disc, this could allow the pistons to be ejected from the bores
Admittedly most people wouldnt let the pads wear down wafer thin, but just wanted to point it out.

If you look at the cooling fins on both calipers you can see they are different, they also look different width wise when viewed side on,
i guess because of the slightly bigger pistons in the larger caliper.

I know Ali has used the Peugeot disc's

Can Atomman confirm what disc's you used and how thick they are please

Reason being i bought some Hilux calipers, thinking they were going to be the S12W ones
but are infact S13WB's and am now wondering about the best disc to use with them,
or move them on and source the others

Also wheel size becomes an issue as the calipers are larger

I bought the kit a couple of years ago but I have never got around to fitting it. If I remember rightly the discs you want are vented discs four stud pattern that were fitted either to a 280 ZX or a 300 Z. If you get stuck I will look up and find out for you.

Been doing a lot of research/reading on these calipers, as ive been trying to ascertain which
caliper seals kit i need for my S13WB calipers, and in doing so have found other nuggets of info :D

S12+8 for standard Datsun solid discs (Very Early Hilux!) 42.8mm and 33.8mm piston's

S12W for upto vented 20mm discs (Early Hilux LN130) 42.8mm piston's

S13WB for upto vented 25mm discs (late Hilux LN130 and KZN,VZN130) 45.3mm piston's

All three variants bolt straight on, the differences being the obvious different physical size's and thus the weight!

The S12+8 should fit behind 14" wheels with no issues, the S12W may need fettling to fit behind 14" wheels, as per Ali's previous post/pics
The S13WB will most likely require 15" wheels minimum, as they are slightly wider than the S12W

S12W+S13WBa.jpg
The bottom caliper S12W, there is only one raised area where the brake line connects

S12W+S13WBb.jpg
On the left S13WB notice the wider machined area for the bigger/thicker discs to run in

S12W+S13WBc.jpg
The pad securing arrangement is slightly different, the red dots indicate where the pad retaining pins, wire clip
central point, is positioned on the outside of the body on the S12 and hooks over to the inside on the S13
and the obvious large retaining clip on the back of the pads on the S13WB

S12W+S13WBd.jpg
Slightly different cooling fin arrangement

S12+8.jpg
S12+8 with the different sized pistons and no cooling fins

link below for new seals and replacement pistons if needed for the S12W and S13WB calipers

And for those who havnt read the earlier posts and have got here via a search

the S12+8 caliper with solid brake disc fits with no mods to 240 or 260 hubs

the S12W and S13WB caliper with vented disc require a spacer for 240 hubs, fits without mods on 260 hubs

Right time to update this thread,

I have a new 240z and I wanted to do the same trusted front brake upgrade, but after paying for a few sets of Pug 505 vented disc's and none arriving then being refunded all the money i gave up looking and went about finding a new of the shelf disc that would work with the same Hi-Lux calipers and was in plentiful supply and would not run out for years to come,

After a bit of a search I found some that are a bit thicker but the same offset, so you I can use the same ali spacer i made for the pug disc's.

Here it is with the new disc and a bit of test Fishhook pattern ( not finished yet as i need to add another row)

It does need a bit of machining as did the old 505 disc's but uses the same spacer, (that you 260z owners don't need anyway), but with an added mod to the calipers.

Regards

Gary

What was the said calliper mod you mentioned?

Does anyone have specs for the 505 vented discs; details of the diameter, offset etc?

I had to split the caliper and machine a bit more relief in it for the wider disc, (because i have a S12W caliper, so with a S13WB you shouldn't need to)

From my measurements the caliper is fine for this modification as it doesn't affect the strength in any way or go anywhere near the fluid gallery's , I've also checked the pad thickness to piston ratio so when they wear the pistons wont pop out,

But I want to double check everything and make some final adjustments before I road test them,
