Sump removal

well if you decide to take the sump off, as has been mentioned earlier it's a pain trying to put the gasket back on. To keep it in place, i tied it in several places with string through the bolt holes and was able to get a few bolts in, before removing the string.

Sounds like a good idea, your name nearly got a mention earlier in the Datsun music quiz.
So far I'm gonna have to go with jonbills and the external magnet method, this guy has got some cool ideas and he got Red barchetta right in the music quiz and he's got a 75 260z same as me all though they never made them in 75.

Must update the sig. It was built in '74!
As a build on the magnet thing: if it is in the sump and you can pick it up with the magnet, you could spend a few fun hours trying to get it out through the oil drain hole

I've had my sump off in the last week to replace the gasket which was leaking, I found that loosening the engine mount nuts to the end of their threads & lifting the engine to the limit of the nuts gave just enough room to pass the sump through the steering rack bracket & past the pickup, I also loosened the gearbox brace to help pitch the engine back.

As others have said it's doable but a pain, thankfully I have a pit so I didn't have to do it on my back

Well I spent all day Saturday on me back, and realised you don't have to lift the engine to remove the sump all you have to do is turn it towards the exhaust until it hits the engine mounting then you can manoeuvre it downwards and out without even touching the oil strainer. Anyway no lash-pad in the sludge wouldn't of made it there anyway there's a shelf with an upstand fitted to the sump which goes around the strainer. So after digging around with garden wire for a few hours and getting nowhere decided to look in the Haynes manual and realised the cog on the oil pump has gotta be bigger than its shaft so there has to be a void around the shaft so I removed the front bearing cap and used a super duper neodymium magnet just over the void and Voila the lash pad came out the void and lodged itself between the block and the front cover thank $%€¥ for that now all I gotta do is put it all back together tomorrow, thanks for all the feedback and ideas guys.

Glad to hear you got it. Which cog are we talking about here? the cog on the drive spindle?

Yes you can see it looking up the front cover with bearing cap removed. Do you reckon the old sump gasket will hold up if I just clean it all up, it's still attached to the sump at the moment?
