Not sure if the following applies to the 280zx motor!!!
But I got 2&1/4 inch bores on my 260z which work fine with a 6-2-1 header, on 240zcarbs, made engine more revy at top end lost maybe a tiny amount from below 2500, this was recommended to me by Ian Tate ex Holden Dealer team chief mechanic and top Historic car tuner in Oz. he said that standard exhaust bore size 1&7/8 was restrictive but too large a bore and you will lose power as well.
He was Peter Bocks engineer and was responsible for some of the Bathhurst winning cars in the seventies, he has done quite a few 240-280z for historic racing and regards them highly.

I have just emailed Longlife at the Basingstoke branch to ask for a quote for a standard replacement system for my 280zx 2+2 (1980), will be interesting to see if they charge the same between different branches. Will let you know... Mine has a kind of misfire, but hoping the leaky exhaust is mostly, if not all, to blame.

Hi
i got my Longlife installed last year and looks almost the same setup worth a small box in the middle and a small round box at the back, into a tailpaiece I chose a 2and 1/4 inch pipe and still looks like new, quite loud, but deep and throaty!:D
It was about £500 installed, including installing the motorsports 6-2-1 manifold.

Had a new exhaust made and fitted at Longlife in Basingstoke, but am disappointed with the result especially the 2 into 1 section Y piece, it is just poorly constructed and will do nothing for performance. To top it off the end piece which I briefed to be "standard" and "a like for like replacement" ended up a horrible boy racer over sized item which sticks out too far, and its welded on. Just spoke to the chap on the phone and he seems to be listening to my concerns, has agreed to swap the end piece will email him the pics from the post 'how it should look' and take it from there.

When mine was fitted they let me chose any tail pipe I wanted, I chose an black tailpipe which is straight.
I think the fabrication quality will be totally down to the branch as longlife is just a franchise.

I agree, it is only as good as the fabricator, I just assumed there would be a basic standard. Wont post any pics here of what was done until I get feedback from the guy who did it, think they just rushed it. Will give him a chance to redeem himself. :smash:

Right... update on exhaust. Bloke at Longlife Basingstoke is going to sort out my 'issues', just need to book it in... once I have cured a possible water pump/altenator bearing noise, and misfire... aaaaahhhh!!!! I JUST WANT TO DRIVE IT!!!!

I would be surprise if there was 15 minutes of work in the Y piece fitted to mine! I have it re-booked for Wednesday to have that bit redone and the 'comedy' end piece changed. I wont be paying them any more either! If they mess it up again will get the details of the guy that did yours and will get it rectified there. They did a splendid job for you!
