Would be around £10k for a real nice job I would worry if it were much cheaper than £9k and at the same time it shouldn't take more than £12k, but this will come down to labour price, you won't find much cheaper than £40 an hour, but of course some places will be £65+ so this can bump the price up.

I'll be paying around £12k for mine I imagine, finished to top standards and including colour sanding.

Bodyshop I work for sometimes at home would be between £9-10k for this at least.

The last few classic restorations I have done, I epoxy coated , filled, primed and blocked back myself. I then asked the body shop to check the car was straight enough to paint before they applied the final colour , flatted and polished. I painted the engine bay and underside etc at home. I saved an absolute fortune and was very pleased with the results. Worth a go if you have the time and shallow pockets like me ;)

Just keep in mind that the final coating is the easy part, no matter how good that is, if the primer, filer and blocking underneath is not good enough the finish will never be good enough. So only do this yourself if you are sure you will be able to do it to a level that will be high enough for you. And keep in mind it will be very dusty and to get a high level finish both a bit arduous, boring and time time consuming. (Again, all depends on the level you are aiming for)

I'm really anal though and have a high attention to detail so I see things which most don't.

I’ve found over the years that some painters won’t put the colour coats over something they haven’t prepared themselves from bare metal … understandable in many ways as they have to give a guarantee on the final finish …

You can achieve a very high level. Its all about patience and being methodical. The dust in primer is not really a problem as it gets flatted out. I block back a number of times until am happy ( I am a perfectionist too). Use a slow panel wipe to check everything is straight and then talk to your body shop guy. There are plenty of good painters out there who will do what you want, as you say putting on the colour is the easy part. I even supplied the paint last time with no issues. The car came out arrow straight and looked fantastic.

You and I may be able to. But not everyone has the patience for or the eye to be able to do bodywork to a high standard. I've seen some terrible home jobs, so I just feel its important to be realistic that it might not be for everyone.

I know I'm bad enough when it comes to tidying up the plastering at home!
