Hey Guys
looks like there is a very good foundation here of the starting of a new local group as I know that long time member Vaughan Hughes lives quite near to you three in Lifton and has always felt a bit lonely down there

Welcome to the club and good luck with your car. I've got a nice 260Z two-seater which I drive most days. I am also mechanically clueless, but I have received lots of help from this forum and have been lucky enough to find a mechanic who has a garage quite local to me who is very knowledgeable about Zs so he has been great.
If ever you need any bit of my car photographing so you can see how something should look. let me know - I would be happy to email you pictures etc. Enjoy the car - there is nothing like them!

Very keen to get out in mine and meet up with other owners once I'm confident it'll get me there and back!

Thanks mate, and thanks for the offer. I am hoping to become less clueless through necessity. This will be Z ownership on a budget, so learning to do most of it myself is really my only option. I am hoping to develop some kind of Zen-and-the-Art-of-Motorycle-Maintenance type of inner peace from it too, haha. I intend too - there are few cars out there at any price that I love as much.

Right, got some leads and a meter. Jumped it. Battery reading pretty much bang on 14.0V with the leads still attached, take them off and let it run on its own and this immediately drops to 11.0V, then 10.5, 10, 8 6 and engine dies. Over the course of about 20-seconds. Revving it makes no difference. Hard to be sure without driving it, but engine seemed to be running fine and smooth with the leads attached, revved freely.

Definitely sounds like the voltage regulator or alternator is faulty. I'd start by checking all the connections though (voltage regulator / alternator / battery), might just be dirty or loose contacts if you're lucky.

Will do. Will get a battery charger too and get that fully charged up so I can run it on its own steam and do the alternator test out of the Haynes.

Big thanks to Michael (Superdry) for popping over today and pointing out a few things and offering his advice!

Hi Tim
Not too far from you if theres anyway I can help.I do have the odd spare part around if it could be of any use.I've got a 240 so another oldy in the South would be good.
Cheers Vaughan

Hi Tim
Looks like your alternator, car seems to be running at total loss.
If it was just the regulator you would be getting a varying voltage with revs.
Recommend a new alternator with built in regulator.
There is a chap recommended to me by another club member can't remember who but will be on some of my threads.

Welcome
Andrew

Hi Andrew, i did come across your thread actually whist I was searching around on alternators and regulators on here. That would be the guy at Superstart, right? I have seen a 280ZX alternator on eBay also. The whole wiring in of diodes and resistors etc is putting me off that solution somewhat though. I have to go back and collect the tailgate, roof skin and bumpers I bought with the car soon and I am going to see if the guy has a spare alternator and / or regulator lying around (he has a lot of spares) as well before I do anything else.

Only thing is Tim is that these old regulators are ancient tech, and can cause all sorts of issues as was the case for me.
The conversion to a more modern alternater is very simple and a few guys here have done it.
Yes it was Superstart, if you are a member you will get a discount as well.
