New performance strurts

I had an emailconversation with Intrax ( Auto veren, schokdempers en schroefsets door Intrax Racing Suspension ) they are going to make a set for the 240z too, they already have a set thats made for rally purposes ( Datsun 240Z / 260Z / 280Z (Nissan Fairlady Z) schokdempers RSA / Intrax Racing Suspension ) but if i bring my car over there and pay them 3000 euro's they will make me a set fully adjustable, heigt, damping, inbound, rebound, and everything else. They will mount it on the car as well and i get a free trackday with a mechanic to adjust it to my desires.
After that they can make more sets because they'l have all measurements form my car.. so i guess they can do it cheaper.

Good lord, that is big money...Apart from the installation, the GAZ units would cost you less than 1000 euro:eek:...and they are height, damping, inbound, rebound etc adjustable and before I get shot down, they use complete new tubes not welded collars:rolleyes:

Great post Robin thanks
I was looking to do something very similar but to use the eye bush that most new aftermarket struts have to allow the strut to pivot at both ends (the top has a spherical bearing) that way you can maintain geometry (better) under compression/extension

So your going to do away with the top strut mount as we know it, one hole through the middle with the damper rod passing through, and replace it with a bolt in clevis type arrangement?

Something similar to the 2 items in the top left hand of this pic?

Does the set up ^^^^ allow for camber and caster adjustment from the top mounts or is that non adjustable? Awesome kit

Exactly my thoughts. Good suspension is probably the most important component of a Sports Car both for it's ultimate dynamic performance and driving pleasure/satisfaction. A well sorted S30 on it's struts can perform really well.

These super-dupa mods MAY work but they are overkill for 95% of people on here and just not needed.

If you are a top class competitor (or building a competition car) maybe but they do really spoil a classic/historic 70s car.

I know I've said this before about modern mods to an old car and those who want to buy the latest bling will do. I've seen it so many times, especially with the younger guys. Just look in the 'boy racer' mags.

Lots of mods are done for the challenge and as Pete says because he can - which is ok but they may not deliver a proportional improvement.

If you want a Nissan with modern suspension etc etc buy a 370Z/GTR.

Just my view folks and to promote discussion.

I know, I know :unsure::unsure:

But where do we draw the line when it comes to performance versus originality?.....its very subjective.

From a personal front I am not sure or where I would stop to "make it better" I get my enjoyment out of improvements and the engineering challenges associated with it

Your hypothetical Georgian grade II has a large value in both financial and historical terms and is a referance point, and whilst I value my car, I am a Darwinian at heart and evolution continues.

There is a place for both I believe

6. It might be a total failure...oh well move on to the fibre glass dashboards instead....oh hang on Sean has already developed those

Fortunately the Melton express already has very competant suspension (Leda) .........................
As stated, we have no intention of selling them.....BUT if it can be made to work them there is nothing stopping anyone doing it themselves.

Luckily the 'B'-Team is there for us, busily planning around the kitchen table, armed with Rich Tea biscuits - kinda like a rugby scrum with just two players !

Thanks for inventing the wheel - I was kinda lost back there.....:lol:and Leda suspension ? I had that back in 1991 - seems an eternity now.

Carry on up the strut or are they strurts you're reinventing ?:D

What about those chaps who rip out their open stone hearth to slip in a granulo-wood-chip burner ?

Ho hum, back to MY kitchen table, plans within plans......

Yes thats what i was about to tell them, if they are using my car to make references for 240z's in the future they should make me a set fro free :)

I am happy with this topic and hope some interesting stuff will come from it.

Guys, I raved about this race car - ok it's not really an S30. It was a bargain but on the wrong side of the Atlantic. Craig you could do this with your front end ;)

We are not suggesting that a traditional S30 cant perform well. .
Steve and me are not 95% of people so what 95% of people need or want or can afford is of no interest to us.
We do what we want cos we can. We arent trying to develop a kit to sell. We are quite comfortable with our "proper job" incomes.
We know it might not work but until we try we wont have a definitive answer.
If it fails ... so be it. all we have lost is some time and a few quid. We can resell the shocks

Spoil a classic car??? Maybe,... but in the free world we live in you are allowed to spoil anything you own to your hearts content so long as it doesnt break the law or upset the neighbours.:D

Just when I thought I'd made up my mind on the route to go with my strutts, then this thread comes along and I'm back to square one.

Spoke to Gaz yesterday for a chat and they quoted me a lot more than the £350 per end suggested earlier. I guess their prices have gone up. The design they use is the "traditional" threaded tube and adjustable platform. They also suggested 350/180 spring rates! Any comments on this?

I need to choose what to do soon as the season will be on us soon.

When i spoke to them it was £600 for match springs and dampers with new tubes with threaded collars put on, £900 for fully adjustable ones with external adjustment.

Fourways want 50% more than the above if you go through them! Seems like a lot of profit for a phone call.

Hmm, cant comment on the prices but spring rates seem high to me. My set up is 200/170 and its not overly firm...( its not a s30, but datsun all the same;) 980kg with CA18DET engine). It could be a wee bit stiffer up front so 225 would be bang on.

Your engine is much heavier so perhaps the 350 will suffice? Did you specify that you wanted it for track use or just fast road?

Is that F/R for a drag car application? 350 for a car on the road is mental and it will understeer like hell I reckon! I thought you had a Toyota engine not a Merlin.
