Looks great Moggy!!

Mark, thanx, you're right - engine isn't stock at all, it's a BMW 850 V12 and 6 speed

Chelle, What cams do you have in the V12? I ask because a friend of mine has an 850csi and wants to change the cams. If you have changed them did it make much difference?? Thanks

twoforty,
We're using the Schrick cams..
I know others report some improvements in their 850's but as I never had the engine in this car with the stock cams I honestly couldn't say how big the change is. I know this engine, when it was in the doner car, definitely sounded healthier than the ones in my BMW 750's. Word of warning though, they are pricey.About $1200 US for the pair of cams. Henry in the US has a steeper cam, but it requires some further modification of the engine.

Thanks for the info Chelle , I will pass it on to him. BTW, who is Henry? :)

oops, here'sHenry's site - he has some pricey optionss, but he's the best at getting power out of these engines.. http://www.racingpowerplant.com/bmw_m70.htm
from his site:
With the recent interest in performance modifications for the BMW M70 engines, I have collaborated with a high quality and long established cam manufacturer to make an efficient and aggressive cam package.
This package changes the M70 valve train design from a pad follower to a roller type design. The cams themselves are custom units made from a steel billet.
With the M73 engine having the components of a roller design we decided to incorporate those into the performance package for the M70 engine. There are several advantages to a roller type valve train. The two main attributes are the reduced friction and the ability to have a faster ramp design on the lobe.
These cams are designed to have a operating range to 7500 rpm. Idle quality is very good with just the slightest hint of lope. Depending on other tuning modification, the cams peak hp can be between 5700 and 6800 rpm.
SPECIFICATIONS
Stock / Power Plant
duration 213 245 int / 255 exh
valve lift 10.4mm 11.4mm
lobe centers 112 deg. 110 deg.
ROLLER CAM CONVERSION (M70 engines)
  • roller rockers
    spring retainers

    spring seats - inner
    spring seats - outer

    intake valves
    exhaust valves

    TOTAL CONVERSION - - - $ 1,157.58

Looks like a jumped up Opel GT with that rear ! Even a standard Zs' interior is better than that and I won't even start on the engine........

Hahaha :D The back end is the most noticable to anyone you drive past, it looks wrong. I doubt average joe would know one engine from another with the right exhausts.

Awesome pics Chelle! Great article too, I didn't know it was based on a 280! I should read more carefully in future! :D

Thanks for the post! :)

Good luck GTO seekers - I've bailed from the GTO search and bought another '60's endurance racer from Modena instead ;)
