While being a geek and researching stuff, I came across this AMAZING and looooooooooong article!

It covers absolutely everything with some good humour along the way. But I warn you it's looooooooongg and informative !! (Yet understandable to the non-engine builders like me!)

And that only covers about 30% of whats needed to build a decent L series

Is there a good book / resource you can point to for the other 70%?

I have both "Frank" books already but always hungry for knowledge so do tell!!

Its not all in "one" specific place and is dotted around many corners of the engine building tuning world, its about finding the relevant bits of the jigsaw and putting them together, some of it needs tweaking given that time has passed and materials etc. have improved

There are many well respected experts but Look for books by a guy called David Vizard who is considered and engine guru the world over his presentation style is excellent.
None of his written stuff is specifically "about" L series but 4 stroke theory is all relevant

I've been reading that the stock crankshaft damper is not the final word in damping and a fluid damper is a wise investment for an engine that is regularly revved high (mine rarely makes it past 5.5-6k RPM - beyond that is less push more scary noise)!!

Here's one from our own club archives ...

Where do you buy a Z specific one of those from? All I can find on 'tinter are rubbery ones or silly expensive ones. Like this ....

http://www.bhjdynamics.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=10&products_id=200

What works best for a street driven (spiritedly) L series? Is the rubbery one really that bad?

ati make a decent one that costs less than the bhj.

Kameari also make one that's less than both the above.

Really holding back comments about your rubbery one!

I have the Kameari one, but... I can't remember where I saw it, but I remember seeing some good analysis that concluded that the stock one is OK for L24 up to 7k plus rpm and L28 upto about 6k rpm.
i.e. for the shorter stroke crank, harmonic resonance doesn't occur until rpm rates that most people don't go to, whereas the resonance does occur for l28 and strokers in the practical rpm range. and so you need a proper harmonic balancer.
