If it looks historical, it's probably passed through a few pairs of hands, I would just keep quiet.

Thanks guys, I'll just carry on as I was then.

Now that I've found out that the supplied '84 wing is incorrect, is it sellable and are OSF wings available for the '87 model?

Hmmm, found it - something smells....
The stamped vin on the bulkhead has been cut through and then covered with filler and painted over.
It looks like this has been done many years ago, what have I got?

I looked at the seat belts for date tags but nothing there, is there any other way of identifying the shell?

Sorry to read that, I had a similar thing once:(

On a personal level, I would try to get my money back on it. It looks like a stolen motor to me.
Have you done a vehicle check on it?
If you did get it roadworthy, what would happen with the insurance? If you insure it as an 84 model, you would be crucified in the event of an accident.
I doubt if you would ever be able to sell it in the future.

I would get the matter sorted now as if you get stopped by a TrafPol or take it for an MOT and the obvious Bodge is seen, the vehicle could be seized for an exam by VOSA or the Police. If I were you, get the engine number from the LH of the block by the bell housing and ring your local force. They can do an engine check which can marry up the true ID of the car. A lot of the times in old-er ringers which is what it is, the insurance company may let you buy it for a small fee but the DVLA would have to Re stamp the Vin.
BTW what side wing do you need ?

Its obvious that the Irish reg has been grafted onto the MKII probably as its Nicked but there is only one way to find out. Get the local force to check the Engine number!

Cheers Northerner,
Is the engine number alongside the VG30 stamp on the back end of the engine, because if so - that also has been rendered illegible, meaning that that there are no identification numbers of any kind to be seen.

yes it starts vg30 try getting a fine file and file the surface gently as I was taught to do this on my stolen vehicle course. The stamp goes quite deep into the metal

Strangely though, it's been running around like this for seventeen years at the very least !

I'm going to see the polis tomorrow, wonder if it's possible to keep it and re-register it on a Q plate?

Perhaps Simon / Spannerboy shoul look at this thread and see how mark knowledge highlights this sort of issue and it's not just knowledgable members showing off.

I'll be amazed if they don't take and impound that for a few months
Then if your lucky they might give it back if they cant prove its history
Or just scrap it so no one gets it
Soon see ...

Ok, I'm just back from seeing the local police, told them the story and they are not interested because of the age of the "ringing" offence. They will do a PNC check (once their system is working again) and will let me know if anything flags up.

Basically they said "talk to DVLA", maybe a Q plate is on the cards :)

It was so tempting to advise you to keep quiet and use the car. Would you ever have a problem - who knows, but you would always feel awkward about the car.

Police - well tbh I can't blame them, they must have so many recent cases to chase that this would seem a lot of work for no reward.

I don't know how much you paid for it but you may be able to 'break' it for profit - however I suppose even that would be illegal especially as the 'cat is out of the bag'.

Track-day car?

Track day car - lol - I'd probably kill myself in it.

I would like to make it street legal, depends on what DVLA say, it is an unidentifiable car ( other than it's a Z31 turbo from approx 1987 -1989. That's why I was looking along the lines of it getting a Q plate.

If it was my car, I'd just stay quiet, out of sight out of mind, especially as the car has been running around like that for so long, the only person who's going to lose out is you CrashCourse.

A "Q" plate renders a car virtually worthless in many peoples eyes, as long as its safe and has a justifiable MOT enjoy it for what it is.

That's my 2 pennies worth anyway!
