Rob, the beer was fantastic, clearly I had a few more than I could handle, hence the many typos

The pit saves so much time, I've done a clutch on a 350 using axle stands before & it's so awkward. I always worry about them either failing or the car coming off them as you remove, tough bolts & heavy parts of the car.

I know that I should have replaced the seal & normally would. I'm working on the theory of a quick fix just to get me by for a few months before the rebuild where I'll be stripping & replacing nigh on every consumable part.

I have a feeling that theres something broken in the engine as I found a few metallic fragments in the bottom of the sump. Initially thought it might have been part of a piston ring. But done a compression test last week & all was even, plus when the sump was off I turned the engine & inspected the sleeves the best I could, couldn't see any scoring so I'm guessing its come from the top side

Bits in the sump  If you hadn't looked you wouldn't have worried.

I notice that you were able to get the box off with the exhaust in place. On my old Z I had to remove the GDS exhaust which also meant the carbs and inlet manifold each time! Also converted to an S14 box which was a bit bigger and heavier. Nightmare on your own lying under the car. Also taking the prop off with thicker anti-roll bar was fun. Standard equals easier usually.

I'm still not to worried, they look as if they have been there for a while.........

Yes just about, removed the chassis brace from the box & used 2 trolley jacks to manoeuvre it out as I wasn't sure if it would come out, going back in I just went free hand which was a lot easier albeit a bit risky.

Theres always a price to pay when moving away from OEM parts, but I'm sure it's worth it :)

Ok well I stand corrected, the pieces I found in the sump were not metallic, have just tested them with a magnet. I think they are plastic or hardened rubber. maybe part of a gasket so I'm a little less concerned about the engine letting go now :)

How easy was it to remove the sump ?? Did you need to lift the engine up

How are you getting on with this?

Not a lot has happened of late, due to work commitments, replaced the ignition side of things to cover the basics & to start a collection of essential spare parts. So new coil, rebuilt distributor, points, rotor, new plugs etc. Changed out the front shocks which were pretty tired, replaced brake fluid. some new wheels. Just enough to tied me over & hopefully get me a lap of Wales later this month before I go all out on the re-build starting October

The sump was a little awkward with the engine insitue & without lifting it. There a about 6bolts that are pretty difficult to access & had to remove & reattach the pick up with the sump lowered but not removed. But it has solved the oil leak & the clutch no longer slips. Just a little judder when pulling away.

I have a new clutch assembly ready for the re-build but theres little point in doing it before then

Hi Paul

Yes I'm really pleased with the base I have, I do however find something new to do to it every time I enter the garage

I'll focus on a proper build thread in October when I plan to start the strip down.

Possibly facing from timing chain tensioner or guides. Hopefully from an earlier historic failure, but worth checking just in case...

What are you planning for your rebuild? Bare shell and up? Keeping it LHD?

Yes I want to remove every ounce of paint & dirt, fully restore the body/shell, re-build the engine & drivetrain replacing any worn or tired parts along the way. I firstly wanted to convert it to RHD but not so sure now as with it being a fairly small car I don't have any real issues with the LHD. But then again I do change my mind like the wind.
I'm looking to keep the car fairly standard looking, but I think the euro/jdm front valance & boot lip is a must on the styling side
