Hi, I'm going to be fitting new engine support mounts to my 240z....so need to support the engine...I know its not ideal, but has anyone use a jack and a plank of wood under the sump to support the engine? ....or has it ended in disaster

cheers Graham

Well, obviously only do that if you've no other method to support the engine such as an engine support beam.. I'm sure you could hire one somewhere? Looking at prices it's a shame you can't buy and return on the same day?

Honestly we have all done it .
Just put a block of wood between the jack and sump it’s just the engine weigh your supporting not the whole car .
tbh most of us have a spare engine sitting on its sump in the garage lol

I think my main concern with supporting the weight of the engine on the sump, is that it will put more load on the sump gasket (than the correctly torqued bolts) and could lead to potential leaks later?

Perhaps just replace one mounting at a time and somehow twist the engine. I think you'll be fine though if you spread the load over a large area of the sump.

If you are uncomfortable with supporting the engine on the sump, I would suggest investing in an engine support beam. Very useful if you ever need to remove the engine crossmember or steering rack (I need to for changing the sump gasket on my ZX)

I got one from machine mart in their sale, worth the piece of mind if nothing else.
