Gearbox oil change / flush

If anyone were to drive a car with a decent North American market ‘box and then a comparable-in-condition RoW one, apart from the lack of a fifth gear would a layman be able to ‘know’ which one he was driving? And is the real-world difference measurable?

I believe we said Swepco201 for steel synchros and something like MT90 if you have brass synchros (the latter being in North American cara.

I’ve got a 1973 240z with L28 block / gearbox. US car. So does that mean MT90 for me?

Apparently so. I guess Nissan went to the trouble of doing it differently for that market for this reason.

But soon-ish, I will know the difference between the oils. I have to say, in comparison with what I had in the box before (which strangely smells of fish), the MT 90 makes the gears less willing to engage - which is a shame. I can only assume it’s not as viscous as what was there before. Swepco next, once I sort out the immediate issues.

Really can’t say like that dude because you need to find the gearbox type / number off the side of the ‘box itself. If you can’t and want to play safe, then MT90 won’t damage either brass or steel synchros.

I think you'll be fine with MT90. It's API GL4 which is compatible with both.

I've bought some Castrol Syntrans Multivehicle 75W-90. It's GL-4 (not GL-5 or 4/5 which I understand is important).

I plan to use it in a gearbox I need to test on the car. If the gearbox turns out to be good I might treat it to the more expensive stuff!

Thanks guys.

While I’m on the subject. When I did my rear diff, I just put in Comma GL5. Anything specific I should be using in my diff?
