gearbox drain plug washer?

Should the gearbox drain plug have a separate washer?
I can't see any reference to it in the manuals. I came across a USA forum that said the gearbox uses the same type crush washer as used on the oil sump plug.
Mine has a slight gearbox drain plug leak. When the oil was changed a few months ago there wasn't a washer in place.

I thought they were tapered threads and so sealed when tight.
