Vehicles that can display black and silver plates

Since April 2015 vehicles manufactured before 1 January 1975 can display the older style plates. You must:

  • have applied to DVLA, and
  • be registered within the ‘historic vehicles’ tax class.

From DVLA, so you may be ok since your is a P, 1975, but may have been manufactured earlier, but it obviously doesnt roll over every year like the tax exemption does!

I tell you what - it's chuffing confusing:

be registered within the ‘historic vehicles’ tax class.
This allows your vehicle to retain its authenticity and be in keeping with its age.

Vehicles constructed 40 or more years ago are exempt from vehicle tax.

The 40 year exemption date rolls forward automatically each year on 1 April.

This could mean either way with the 40 year - taken from here https://insidedvla.blog.gov.uk/2015/11/17/whats-the-story-with-black-and-silver-number-plates/

And from my previous link:

The black & silver number plate does not have to endure such regulations, and as the current stipulations are based on the 40 year exemption date rolling forward each year from the 1st of April, later classic cars will eventually fall into the tax exempt category which means black & silver number plates for everyone….eventually.

About as clear as mud!!

Agreed, it is a bit ambiguous :(

As i see it, black and white plates for pre 75 vehicles only

Applying for historic status for the free road tax appears entirely seperate from the number plate rules and i think people are getting confused between/within the two and assuming the black and white plates roll over with the historic tax exemption

You might be right mate - but there is evidence from both sides on this one, and I'm certainly no expert.

I've e-mailed DVLA for clarity on if the black and silver plates roll on with the 40 year tax exemption or if it is locked at 1975 now. I'll share the outcome

I love the changes you've made so far, the car looks great. Amazing how a few small details can really transform the look of the car! In complete agreement about sitting the fender flares etc.

Also think the colour looks fantastic!

Can I ask what tyre size you have on those 15X9 Rota's.

Any fender rub in the front on turns or driveways?

The tyre and wheel look is spot on in my opinion.

15x225x45 I think. I'll double check when I'm home from work. There is no rubbing at all, but it is on coilovers.

The recessed front indicators are a 280 thing I believe so only US market. I'm guessing this is a 280 Jon?

I'd say that's Andre's car. Did you pick it up from around Mansfield by any chance?
I almost bought the car but passed on it and Andre bought it. That was about 2.5 years ago.

I think it was Andres car looking at some historic posts.

However I picked it up from Nottingham from a dentist who had bought it at a show last summer - he just didn't have room for it as he had 3/4 TVRs that he was working on.

I just clocked the reg, yes it was Andre's car. He picked it up from down London way.
Does it still have the roof lining center console thingy?

Have fun :) :driving:

It does still have the lining mounted cassette deck! - although that's only till the new liner arrives and I strip it out. The Mrs wants me to keep it in as she likes it - crazy...

Ooo, we need a pic of that before removal.

Love the colour of the car. The ONE thing I would change is the plates. P reg on silver and black plates just looks wrong to me! Even if legal or not - which I suspect it isn't anyway, there's no way any car in the UK that was P reg came with black and silver ones and obv this was never registered in the UK in 1976 as 280s weren't imported.

I know why one of the previous owners did it though, and why owners of black cars (modern ones) do it ...
