So after posting about my search earlier on this year I finally found a z about 8 weeks ago for a very good price. I've spent the time doing a few little jobs and making sure she is in good running order and finally took her out for a couple of good drives this weekend :)

Just thought I would share some pics from when I got the car to now.

    Jobs done:
    Moved mirrors to doors
    Clean and polish
    Replaced wheels
    Interior cleaned up
    Power steering fitted (dodgy shoulder)

    Jobs to do:
Fender holes to be filled and painted next weekend
Engine bay to clean - it's not bad but not good enough yet
Re rust proof the underside (going to get JR classics to work their magic)

Not a fan of the wheels and the stretched tyres or hood fenders...

Deleted bumper at the rear - which I do like...shame about the stickers though

Today after a clean and polish - mirrors moved and new wheels (only rotas (15x9) but will do for now)

Paint looks ok in the sun for now.

    All tucked away now.

I've had a previous car done with them and it just takes a day - drop it off in the morning and then pick it up when they phone you.

More info here but I'd recommend them. http://www.jrclassics.co.uk/procedure.html

    Cost is roughly 550/600 for a Z I think.

A very nice example and the colour looks great  is it OEM?

not so keen on the Rota's though, theyre nice but very common on Z's, the Hayashi (Rota copies im guessing) suit it well IMO :D

agree about the deleted rear bumper, these cars do seem to lend themselves to that sort of treatment/modification

    Welcome :driving:

Looking at the website i see they use Waxoyl, its not so highly regarded these days from what ive read online and in magazines over the last few years.
Dinitrol or even better Dynax S50 is supposedly far better over a longer time frame.

Not intending to put you off, just wanted to make you aware of other potentially better options :)

Not OEM. It was fully restored a few years ago looking at the paperwork, but the colour is Gamma Gold.

I'd love some watanabes or some period wolfraces or copies for it but these will do for a year or two.

Yep fully aware - they do do Dynax S50 as well I believe, just don't think they update the website very often.

The Rota RKRs age it - which is a good thing and for once, someone has removed those ugly wing mirrors - bravo !

Thanks. Yeah be nice to have it back from the body shop in a few weeks. Anyone got a good guide on removing the fenders? Body shop can fit me in quicker if I can take just the fenders down and not the whole car!

Beautiful (apart from the no. plate font and colour!)

Moving the mirrors is a sound idea too - those fender ones look shocking ... I know why people do it but I don't have to agree with it!

Thanks fastback - the plates were on it when I got it. Not sure if I'll change them or not tbh

    Looks nice, like the colour.

You didn't say how you found the car after your drives? Loving it?

I like your fitted cover, where did you get that from?

Jon, car looks great and I personally like the wheels.
The fenders bolt on and off.

It was great fun getting it out on the road, it drives great and the engine pulls well. Few knocks and rattles in the cabin, but then its 40 years old. It did have a weird buzzing noise coming from the back end for about 5 mins on the first drive and I was panicking about nursing it home thinking it might be the fuel pump - but it turns out it was the radio aeriel motor thats jammed so I'll take a look at that. Once I'd turned that switch off it was great.

Couple of other bits - the gear stick has a bit of play in it so had a look at that and fitted some washers and its fixed that. I do want to do a transmission oil change at some point. the BRAKE light in the speedo is constantly lit as well, even when the handbrake and footbrake arent on, so need to look at that as well, and finally need a new hose to the Vacuum tank as the current one is split.

Car cover is from Classic Additions - was about £130 I think. Madda put me on to them.

Im assuming you already know theyre illegal, other than that, with older vehicles, i guess it depends on how anal your MOT guy is, not to mention local jobsworth coppers!

I understand that once its registered in the 'historic' tax bracket the black and silver plates are legal - but I'm not sure if these stand up to the black and silver reg's. It'll be classed as historic this month anyway before I drive it next.

Im afraid not, historic status doesnt change the law/status regarding the number plates, i think it needs to be pre-1973 or might be 71 , cant remember exactly, for black and white plates.
