"Looks" tasty but is it?

Has anyone seen/used these guys or is there an equivalent in the UK?

http://www.paltech1.com/id10.html

Interested to know if there are serious performance improvements that justify the cost!?

I am unsure if Paltech put bearings in the throttle spindle, where a lot of these carbs now leak air in. May look lovely, but have they done all the work. I would only consider Therapy carb restoration in the US. Most other places I have seem advertized in the UK don't cover a possible air leak around the spindle.

They state:

'Rebuilding consists of New: Throttle shafts & bushings' so surely they cover your concern Ian?

Rob, didn't read that, they may well do and would probably sort any potential air leak. But the advice still stands, not everyone who rebuilds SU type carbs will go to the effort of putting a new bush/bearing in.

What are the symptoms of 'throttle air leak'? Has anyone positively identified the technical issue? I am aware of manifold leakage which is straightforwardly capable of correction but this is a new one on me.

Air can be drawn down the throttle shafts if there is any significant wear. Identified by moving the shafts up and down, side to side with engine running. Should be no change in engine speed.

Andrew, I would still consider looking at Ztherapy as an option, I plan to send my 240z carbs there. Their work is well documented. But if you find somewhere good in the UK....

I have seen some people put a rubber "washer" over the end of the spindle, so when tightened with a nut, it seals. But not really sorting the problem for long.

Carbs will be difficult to tune, due to un-regulated air coming in.

So, I'm going through a carb fetish phase at the moment and doing a lot of homework esp as mine are proving impossible to tune. I definitely have the issue with my shaft, on the rear carb that is (!) and a lathering of copper grease on the end of it showed up the leak briefly but consistently. I can hear the difference at the trumpets and the idle. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction guys.

Imagine how hard it must be to balance 6!!!!!

I'm definitely going the Therapy route. Just not excited about import taxes at 30%ish I think!! But again thanks for the advice.

I've read and heard some awesome personal accounts of before and after with those carbs and I like the idea of the shafts never wearing in my life time with the car.

When I finally get them, I'll update the thread. Expensive option but IMHO worth every penny in eliminating another weak link and the hassle / time saved in rebuilding only to not get the same result or tarty shine under the bonnet! ;)

Update: just spoke with Ztherapy guys, very nice chaps to speak with.

Carbs ordered at a mere $650 inc postage. They are going to my buddy in Boston who will put them in his suitcase when he next visits - we grew up together and he's like a brother but never before have I been this excited to see him ;)

BTW for those like Ian who may be considering the same, ZT have a 6 weeks production backlog and won't bill your card until yours is ready.

Sadly not yet Jon, been on wedding and toddler duties!! Have a play with Z pass for Monday though and will let you know how it goes.

I did do a recce of the car though and I have to say, I'm so disappointed to find that Fourways charged me for servicing my carbs while the head was off but in fact not only did they come back out of balance and running rough but one of the float bowls is "wobbly"/ loose!!!Which explains the intermittent whistling I've been hearing from that carb since the head rebuild!

Anyway, onto more positive things, when I get to do it, I'll start a Z Therapy thread with photos of the job for others to reference if they are going down the same route/ advise me on! ;)
