Build your own garage, ideas?

Ok here are my ballpark finger in the sky costings for building a wall (as produced by an IT guy who's never built a wall.

Say it was 30ft square, 2.5m high, a brick = 215x65mm, add 15mm mortar = 230x80mm.

That's 32 bricks high and 40 long, so 1280 bricks per wall, so 5120 bricks. £200 / 450 bricks from wickes = £2400 of bricks.

+ footing
+ roof
+ area in the front + driveway
+ fitting

it's gonna be about £10-13k I reckon!!! :eek: bollocks

If you go the timber route you will meed to be careful with distances from the boundary under Building regs. All down to protected areas and surface spread of flame.

It is possible to build in timber close to a boumdary but can get expensive as timber cladding would need to have a fire proofing covering (an intumescent paint or similar) or be an Eternet type board.

If the roof is pitched at min 40 deg you should get enough height and it will be much simpler to construct than a Mansard which will probably require the use of steel beams. Bear in mind that the lowest pitch you can practically use with plain tiles is 35 deg and for Interlocking approx 17,5 deg You can go lower but only with the use of specialist undertrays etc.

Haven't had a chance to check out latest planning guides but you will probably need it if you are forming a new access. There also used to be a restrication of 10 m3 for sheds etc (not that anyone seemed to take much notice) but again this may not be there now,

Just seen last post:-
Brick moduule is 215 x 102.5 plus 10mm mortar joint. (Used to allow 60 per m2 for stretcher bond IIRC but may be wrong!) You don't buy bricks from Wickes!!! Find a proper builders merchant who will sell by the 1000 Also bricks vary a lot in price and you will probably have to use something that matches the existing House.

Walls will need 215 square piers at intervals along them or you may need to use 215 walls at the size you are proposing (to help restrain side force produced by the roof.)

At 10m square you are going to need steels to support the roof or use Gang nailed trussed rafters.

I can probably find a few generic Garage plans if they would help but they probably won't be quite that big 6m x 5m is about the normal size for a double.

Nice one thanks! Yeah wasn't planning on buying from Wickes lol but I knew their website for a ballpark cost. Have attached a pic of the house so you can see it's not likely to match it unless I pebble dash and then I have the exterior maintenance problem I wanted to avoid.

I think tbh the price of my super garage lol is starting to sound pretty high!! Like money that'd be better spent on buying a car to put in it!

Maybe go for a big concrete slab, decent fence, massive shed and think about a garage build in a few years? I like to try and do things just the once though and have dreamed about a garage for a long time now, hmmmm

Yup bollocks is about right.........you forgot the labour and skips/grab/digger hire/windows/doors/light/power and a fridge for the beer:cheers:

Try £2500-£3k for footings and digging out. A 28x14ft fairly large wooden garage comes out to circa £6400, includes, doors,windows and erection..less discount......as a z club member....;)

Labour = free mostly
Digger hire = robbed from friend
Fridge = free from freecyclenetwork

Hmmm still, materials alone is gonna be £10k whatever happens...

At least I wouldn't be wasting the money ;)
