2.5 inch is also the font size for car imports, which mine is. And as I say a standard UK plate size does not fit, therefore a smaller plate is needed, therefore a smaller font to permit the required border around the text.

Wow useful info. Jon

I've found this which explains quite a bit:

https://www.craigsplates.com/import-number-plates

So if for example you buy a grey import 350Z with a rectangular rear plate this is for you.

All 240/260 rear ends are made for foreign countries tbh and all imported from Japan. ;)

Just to complete my part of the story ... for the record I have a standard size UK front plate with larger lettering. There is no practical justification not to, the plate bolts to hangers off the bumper, so no restriction on its size. It does not look out of place.

Legal plates for a '73.

Now they look the business. But when you say 'legal' and '73', I assume the picture is like that dress? Although I see black and silver, they're actually yellow/white and black? :D

I had trouble getting the tin reflective with raised plastic digits last week because the car was a 76.

Apparently it's gotta be pre 76 even for these....never heard of that before

Hmm, I'm still to be convinced that it's legal. Not that it bothers me though, I've had them on my '74 for ages.

Look foward to seeing them on the car, I might change mine to that size at the back as the one on is a little too big.

And if you wanted some show plates for display purposes?

I've been running with these on this and also on a few other cars without any issue....even at MOT time

Not black & white, but inspired by bluejon, I did get a new plate.
What do you think? this is the 7" variant that he mentioned.

The font on the plate above is the latest legal one that in my opinion is too thin for the year of car ...

My 944 had similar on it when I bought it so I changed it for the font they used in 1989 ... Looks much better ...

Interesting. Is it a legal requirement to have the issuers postcode on black & white plates like it is on modern ones?
