Has anyone else seen what this guy is doing to make 350Z 6 speeds fit into the 240Z? It looks like a really interesting idea.

Short of the obvious weight increase and possibly ground clearance would there be many downsides? I'm guessing your left with a great cruiser and very flexible car....

its a massive and heavy gearbox, i'm not sure how an exhaust etc clears?

If you follow pancho's garage on youtube then you'll see his video and that he's just squeezed one in. It is massive to fit in the transmission tunnel though.

Surprised this didn't draw more comments...

Yes, thats the worry. Not against the idea. Nothing will fit around it.

I'm not. It's another example of trying to make an old car modern. Just buy a modern car if you want a 6 speed gearbox.

I get why the 6 speed is beneficial. Especially as the CD009 is a really strong box. But I felt the 5 speed was fine with the L series and don't even see my RB benefiting much from going 6 speed, its pretty much perfect as it is, gear ratios are just right for acceleration and motorway. If however I start to break boxes this is what I would upgrade to.

I was pretty happy with the 4 speed I had in the silver car. You get it in 4th by 30mph and just leave it there for the rest of the day. The 3.3 made it good for motorway cruising too.

I see some modern cars have 10 speed boxes!!! They must have really narrow powerbands.

Rob - I take it you have never driven a 240 with a more modern gearbox. I understand this really improves the gear change. Lots of people rave about the 200sx boxes but with them becoming harder to find in good condition, I can see this as a good alternative.

John, I have had three (still got two) Zs with 200SX boxes. My blue car has a wonderful gearbox the best manual gearbox I have ever experienced. I have also owned a manual 350Z and that gearbox was not as good as the 200sx - it was 'notchy' and 'baulked' when cold.

I can understand a 350Z having a 6 speed gearbox because it has to have gearing to allow it to cruise at much higher speeds than a 'classic' car.

 Seems ironic with both your cars running S14 boxes to give a more modern feel with a better experience. Some one has just decided to take it to the next level....

I've going to be really curious to check my diff ratio when I swap mine out as I thought it to be stock with the standard 4 speed however the car really doesn't cruise nicely at motorway speeds like some people mention. The 4 speed is very nice and lazy though I do agree.

Yes I know I realised that when I was typing. There is a big difference though - one is an upgrade to a development of the same gearbox.
