280ZX gearbox into 240Z

Hi all,

I can't recall if this is a straight swap or if the gearstick has to be bent a certain way to allow clearance of the 240 centre console. Does anyone know for sure?

Also, my 280ZX box is of unknown history. Before I install it I'm thinking of taking a look inside and seeing if anything looks worn or broken, would issues be easy to spot?

And how long to install a gearbox? The engine is in the car.

Thanks.

Syncros are the most likely problem, wont be obvious unless you dismantle the box completely i.e. take the gears off. I had an early 280ZX in my 240, it fits straight in.

Thanks guys, I'll just fit it then and see, as I don't fancy taking the gears off.

Be aware that the 280zx box uses a different throw-out bearing with a zx clutch. You'll need to measure the overall depth of your clutch before fitting the box.

Thanks for the reminder Nigel. I think I should be fine with the throw out bearing I have in the current 240Z box as I've been running an L28 with a 280ZX clutch since I've had the car.
