as i understand is the bearings on the throttle shaft on the the hitachi SUs get knackered for want of a better word. The Z therapy work i beleive put in a newer bearing setup, what exactly i dont know.
I would get the chap in edinburgh to have a look.

Really interested to see how you get on with this Graeme...

I have SM needles in my hitachi SUs which run well.

I'm confident it'll be a great job, on a par with Ztherapy. It's also local which makes it easier, and not the first Z rodeo. Getting all my linkages plated too. Dropped all the parts off at the workshop yesterday - his work really does look high quality, not just a clean up. Will post all the pics when it is done.

Graeme, good to hear. It would be beneficial to find out when it’s all done exactly what you get for the cost (and what that is), so others can compare the difference.

Hi all

I’m the guy in Birmingham . I remember doing the carbs mentioned above. I normally refurbish SU but the principles are the same. I was supplied with the very basic rebuild kit, gaskets and needle valve if I recall. I don’t have the tooling to rebush these carbs And the replacement parts are not readily available. ZTherapy do a great job with their custom bearings and bushes and their work is second to none.

As is often the case, carbs need a good clean on the inside and on this set they were full of congealed old fuel clogging up the fuel and airways.

Cheers

Tony

Breakdown of work as follows for those interested...

Hitachi ISO x2

1- Carburetters fully stripped to component parts including complete disassembly of all linkages.
2 - Degreased before being ultrasonically cleaned and and assessed.
3 - carburetters then sandblasted using my own formula grit which externally light and gives an Original Finnish.
4 - carburetters then again examined and assessed before a final ultrasonic clean in fresh fluid.
5 - carburetters set to the engineer to have throttles upgraded with custom throttle roller bearings.
6 - All metal parts Zinc gold plated.
7 - carburetters assembled using new parts.
8 - new parts including - new throttle spindles with custom roller bearings, new main jets, new metering needles (SM), needles valves, float chamber rubbers, seals and gaskets as required, all missing/damaged parts replaced or repaired.
9 - tested for leaks and correct function.

Inlet manifold -

Inlet manifold was found to have several missing damaged parts and water chambers restricted with corrosion.

1 - stripped and assessed.
2 - degreased and cleaned.
3 - time taken to remove and clean corrosion before vapour blasting.
4 - All metal parts Zinc gold plated.
5 - damaged water pipe extracted.
6 - Assembled using new parts, and replacing USA spec cross chamber with U.K. spec cross chamber (supplied by yourself).
7 - New parts include, main water pipe, special sealing nuts and o rings, new water flow pipes manufactured/replaced (only one was available so second one was manufactured).
8 - heat shield cleaned and painted with heat resistant paint.

Carburetters installed onto inlet manifold and set to Datum/Factory settings.

currently playing with MC needles on 2oz springs - they are the ones powering the car in the latest thread about Zstory / muffler sounds.

Difficult to recommend needles without knowing the engine specs; the headers will make a difference but tell us more about the compression, cam, other mods etc. In most cases an unmodified / lightly modified engine will run fine on SM needles.
