No need to cut back the metal bucket . it is however advisable to rewire the headlamps with a pair of relays to help protect the switch

H4 is a good option as they fit in the bucket in place of the old sealed beams but you need to either swap the wires around in the bulb holder or just buy a pair of these adaptors ...

Reading between the lines .It sounds like the dvla have in the case of E type Jaguars allowed the front cradle / clip which I believe has the stamped chassis number be replaced with out the vehicle loosing its identity and being issued a Q plate . sound like other changed could be a foot ?
