Thankfully fingers just fine but had to wear gloves!

I wonder how long it would stay shiny for !? ;)

So learned ones, does anyone know if the fuel rail to carb hoses are supposed to be shaped for some reason?

My existing ones are very stiff, which makes me think they are old, dry and brittle. I plan on replacing them with fresh SAE30 but it also it made me wonder if they are meant to be that way for some reason I don't know about.

Little by little night by night, and we're getting closer to engine in day.

Fuel lines sorted for carbs - shows you how weedy the original braid was.

Question: what to do with this:

coolant pipe.png

Options:

1. make one out of 15/22mm copper pipe to step down and kick up at 45 degrees with a tang to replicate original mounting point.

2. Clean up and blank off - don't like it as it's not neat and quite corroded.

3. Use a step down connector like the one shown (but not that particular one) and bend the rubber up and fabricate a mounting tang to the engine.

I used a silicone cap/plug for mine, looks neatish, I assume your blanking it off because you have omitted the coolant pipe that bends round the back of the engine?

Thank you Mr Toops - I will have to look into that option! Yes I've taken off the carb water circuit.

So, bling day arrived!!

Tonight's work is finishing off hoses and staring to get ready for things going back into the engine bay! [emoji1]

Just to add another spanner to the works

Seeing as everything is now nicely re-plated, to maximize the effect and longevity of the coating, would it not be prudent to lacquer, at least the larger more obvious bling?
The fuel rail, throttle linkages, pulley, bonnet catch and assorted brackets for example :D

Looks like you're going to have a very tidy engine bay once this has all been reassembled. Good to see the quick progress that's being made!

Makes all the difference putting as-new hardware back on the car.

Ah, the voice of experience'![emoji106]

Thanks dude, I'm aiming for a good quality finish but you should see some of the other members' engine bays! Next time Richie P is at a meet, just look under his bonnet! Utterly stunning!

PFFFt. Quick progress is for girls.

We definitely need you to get in touch with your feminine side and get a wiggle on! Can't wait to chase your orange streak around Devon soon!

 A real mans take months and years to really collect all of the suitable parts and components to build a proper car ey!

Not comparable, you're making it smart and very presentable while remaining usable and practical. I'd rather see that than a trailer queen that doesn't see many miles or get driven much in anger every year....

Thanks Mr Woody, I appreciate what you're trying to say and the kind words.

Bear in mind though, Richie's cars are no trailer queens, he simply has phenomenal attention to detail and a bent for keeping his cars in pristine condition after use. He is also quite the walking encyclopaedia of all things S30. [emoji144]

Ahh but does it still go out in the winter months when all things Z hide away :p No denying his awesome knowledge or attention to detail though, amazing Fairlady he has. Bit too many shiny things in the engine bay for me however each to their own...

Stuff is now actually going back into the engine bay!!! Yay!!!!

I have a rule of focused 30 minutes sessions in the garage only doing one specific job at a time. So hopefully in small bites I'll make progress.

Being a perfectionist is always a bad thing when it comes to getting the car back on the road. So progress has been slow.

I tried the 40 shades lighter hydrogen peroxide hair bleach from boots on my fan and the results were good but more like 7-10 shades.

Not like new but a shed load better than before.

Spent a little time cleaning up the cross member and steering rack and an inordinate amount of time cleaning old over spray (the car was metallic red!) and 40 years of grime off the wiring loom.

Old engine mounts had let go of the sides. New engine mounts look great and a lot stiffer than the old ones - so expecting more good L-series vibrations [emoji6]

I wasn't happy with the state of the Y pipe so I cleaned it up and sprayed it

Still wasn't happy with the "capping the unused end off with rubber" solution. So came up with a new one. Back to metal.

Take one Y pipe and one plumber's 15mm end cap - which has a very subtle flare.

Tried to read the vin off the bulkhead for historic dating letter but the copious amount of paint the car has received in it's life is impeding that effort - I may need to get out a rag with thinners and gently get back to metal! Why are easy things difficult!?

Ali, you are becoming excessive - the sun is shining!

Do you really want to clean that VIN - who knows what may lie beneath the layers of paint?

Joking apart - good work. Check your fan for cracks - it looks ok though.

People are going to look at that Y piece and wonder why it doesn't leak - it will look 'open' at a quick glance!

This is coming on really well and the attention to detail is something I hope to acheive on mine.

My progress is extremely slow with everything else I have going on so I hope I still have the enthusiasm to strip it back down and tart everything up once I get it in and running. I have the feeling that I will end up just using it mad max style!

LOL sadly Rob, Mr F needs to see the number or I'll pay road tax! [emoji20]

I checked that fan when I read one of your previous posts - always love the experienced advice.

As for the Y pipe, that's half the fun ;). Actually I did want to put the cap in the other way around but the flare is the opposite way [emoji20]

Thanks buddy, I hope to get her on the road soon and need to drop my standards!

So here's an interesting thing for you if you aren't in a hurry for bits to be delivered - my AN6 end finishers are £3.99 each on eBay, 10x the same item arrive from AliExpress last night ....

Even with express delivery it's still a heck of a lot cheaper.

Now we just need them to make S30 body panels [emoji6]
