Small update, but I received my V5 in the post which means I'm finally able to get the number plates made up!

In my excitement I ordered some off eBay, although if they're poor quality I'll order some off a reputable company. I went for the Japanese standard square size on the rear and a standard English front. I'll update when they're fitted!

Ah wicked! All straight forward then? Did you have to send pics in the end?

Very straight forward - most of the boxes on the form did not apply to the car because it was so old so I literally just had to fill in the absolute basics.

No pictures required.

I've just got back to the UK so I'll get a service done on the car, the plates put on and an alignment. I'm gutted that it's all been so delayed as it's unlikely I'll be able to drive it much considering the roads are being salted.. No doubt I'll still give it a drive, and just make sure I give it a decent wash before tucking it back away. :driving:

Almost! Unfortunately OpieOils messed up my order and I arrived to 1L of oil rather than the 6L I paid for... Whilst I got a refund, I wasn't offered the oil at the discounted rate I had paid for.. The biggest problem was it stopped my doing an oil change.

I decided to get the plates on and get it straight in for an alignment, the front left wheel was out by quite a lot.. After that I went for a decent drive around the forest, as the roads hadn't been salted... Phew!

I stopped off at Ikea on the way back, and annoyingly this was the only place I got a photo of! Stupid me..

Absolutely loved it... It's completely different to anything I've ever driven before, which surprised me.. I was expecting similar to my old supercharged Mk1 Mx5, but it was significantly different.

There's plenty of stuff that I need to address:

  • Petrol/Gas fumes in the cabin
  • Weatherstrip around window has a gap, allowing air in
  • Rear diff has a seep leak
  • Didn't get a chance to do my planned service

However, I'm thoroughly happy to have had a chance to drive it and these are things I can address over Christmas period :)

As above, the engine oil change was simple without any dramas, the old filter came out easily enough!

There was signs of an oil leak from the sump gasket, I'll keep an eye on this to see whether it's worth replacing. It's a custom sump so will have to make do with gasket sealant if it does require fixing.

Also a small leak I think has formed around the back of the cam cover, but it's very small so I'll keep an eye on that but of very little concern for now.

Along with the engine oil change I did a 'quick' gearbox oil change. The process was simple enough, although the filler/drain plug were incredibly hard to get into even with a breaker bar... Eventually they were freed and the process of pushing the thick gearbox oil began. The plug had a few metal filings but nothing to be alarmed about which was relieving.

Having a good inspection of the car revealed that it seems two fuel line connectors are still open, one od them still leaking fuel... This could be the culprit of the cabin fuel smell!

Glad you've got her safely over and on the road to be used. I'm sure it must have been great having that first drive out. What are you plans for her long term?

That lift you've got in the garage also must be rather handy, I'd love a 4 poster or even something like that, if only I had the space!

Long term plans are to get it driving reliably so I can hop in whenever I fancy and drive it. I'm trying not to be too precious about the weather, but I know it'll play a part. There's quite a few jobs that need to be completed to make it comfortable enough to drive about, but once they're sorted I'll hopefully just enjoy the car!

It makes working on the car 10x more enjoyable! I had a quick check under the car to make sure none of the oil I had put in was leaking, and I regretted not spending the extra time to put it on the lift as opposed to raising it slightly.

Sounds like a very sensible plan, much like my own. I'm glad to hear you intend to use it without being too precious of the weather, there's too many cars hidden away to the confines of the garage over winter for no good reason in my humble opinion.

I bet, keep the updates coming

Trying to battle between getting the rust sorted now, whilst it is minimal and (probably) relatively cheap, or just enjoy the hell out of it and get it done properly next winter.

Unfortunately I have 0 experience welding, and wouldn't want to risk doing it on here!

Updates: No real updates, had a few amazing drives through the forest, and accidentally started an impromtu car meet when I pulled over to take a photo - within half an hour there were about 15 cars pulled over having a chat - ranging from a GT3, a couple of 500 Abarths, a Ferrari, Lotus Esprit and a few Spitfires - absolutely love how it draws people in!

I've moved into a new home, now living with the girlfriend, which I'm really excited for! Unfortunately there is no garage here! So the car is currently living about 100 miles away which is a shame, as I haven't had any chance to play with it.

Will be having to look for some temporary garage option for the next 1-2 years, as I'm not super happy about keeping it outside

You got a house without a garage? Get. Out. :D

Maybe look into some kind of local group who maybe share costs for some garage/workshop space (old barn somewhere etc)

I know right.. Unfortunately location dictated the move!

That's a really good idea, I wonder how I'd go about searching for that?

I had no luck searching for a shared garage/workshop area - which is a shame - but luckily there's a "Vehicle Maintenance Centre" on base where I work, which I can hire the lift for free and has a bunch of tools!

I also managed to find a large single garage which comfortably fits the Datsun in.. So that's another success. I was hoping to bring the car up with me this weekend, but with the snow & salt
