Don't you have an alternator specialist in your area that you could take it off and drop it in.Thats all I've ever done.A bit far for you,Devon.!

Mine is the old type using a regulator i have googled it and have seen that you can use a 280zx alternator with an adaptor plug trying to help my mechanic out by getting any info i found a place advertising said alternator but dont know how much work is required to change to 280 one.

The "old type" doesn't have a built in regulator, it is external.
The (slightly) newer 280zx one has an internal regulator that you need some wiring mods to fit to a 240/260.

I think I've got a spare old one you can have if you can get down to Northampton.

1972 240Z running alternator and regulator, just concerned about having the right connections to swap from original, to one with in built regulator. Thanks Status do 260 ones plug straight in and have regulator built in?

Jon thanks for the info how hard is it to change wiring, as my mechanic is willing to do the work but needs a diagram to do the swap.

Regulator built in on 280zx only,to put the zx reg on you need the module ,to be honest if you are not going mad on electrics you won't gain anything by putting a zx reg on,it's something you don't need,

Tbh I don't remember I'm afraid. And I complicated it by replacing the ammeter with a voltmeter. It wasn't hard, just a couple of jumpers on the regulator plug. I just spent a few hours studying the wiring diagrams and the US sites with "how-to's" on the alternator swap.
I may also have an unused diode plug somewhere too.

You need a plug for the regulator loom which links two wires by a diode. I can't get one quickly for you unfortunately as my current shipment from the US supplier has just been collected.
The 280ZX alternator is a straight swap and wires transfer over.

When I had my 260 it had a separate regulator. When the alternator packed up I bought a replacement alternator which had a built-in regulator which I seem to remember just fitted straight on the car but with some additional little plug connector. I think I got it from Mike Feeney.
