Has something happened to toad tax of late??

£300+ for a 1.8T Quattro A4 seems rather excessive I feel, given I pay less for the 2.6 z and a highly polluting emissions scandal riddled 2.0TDI Q5!!!!

I bought my mrs a little pug 107 and that's £0 tax per year as well. Only thing is it cost us £1k this year as she didn't renew the FREE car tax and got a fine.

Apparently it never occurred to her that she had to tax it as the tax was free... so it ended being all my fault for not telling her.

In the end we 'compromised' and I paid the fine for her and had to let her adopt a rescue dog to make up for it...

That is truly nuts! It's paper work for the sake of it!

Do historic tax exempt vehicles have to send a piece of paper off too?

It's mad what it costs these days, my last car (Mitsubishi evo x) was 500 a year, wouldnt mind so much but I only used it at weekends and did under 3000 miles a year. Can't wait to get to z finished and registered and pay nothing for a change

Yes, as mentioned, you still have to apply for it each year as normal even though your not paying anything!

All the 'normal' cars in the family, incl my Transit are all on direct debit for the road tax, much easier and no big hit if its a whopper...£500 for tax :ack:

I hear you! I pay £270ish for the z that did less than 1k miles last year!!! Looking forward to her becoming "historic" in July.

That's a genius idea - believe it or not I had no idea you could DD it!

Yep, my 370Z is in the £500 bracket too. It is a big hit and it does hurt but I just think of it being less than £1.40 a day. That's less than a cup of coffee (not that I buy coffee from those places!)

I agree that it's nuts charging road tax because it isn't at all related to the number of miles done and actual fuel usage or emissions. It would be far better to put tax on the price of fuel as it's fairer.

...Oh wait, there's duty on the price of fuel as well...

Therefore, I just put it into the 'smiles per gallon' category and appreciate the car every day :)

Damn £500 a year for a 370? Is the 350 the same? Still looking for a Nismo but that puts me off a little!!

You can't go historic until January 1st 2018 unfortunately, it can only be done at the start of the year after the car is 40yrs old, mine was in October last year but i had to wait until April, however the rules have now changed to January instead, as from next year.

Just to say, I use mine all year round. But if it's not your daily drive then you can just tax it for the summer months of course.

(sorry about the eggs / granny comment!)

You have to 'tax' your car even if it costs nothing to keep a check on MoT and more importantly insurance. The insurance bit is why you can't transfer tax to a new owner anymore - people were buying taxed cars and not insuring them.

For those who wish to register their cars at my address here and pay NO road tax, offers are invited.

Interesting Rob.

I could follow that logic when we had tax discs on display but now we don't and MOTs + insurance are electronic, I think the government has missed a cost saving trick.

When my old A4 got written off by Admiral last summer (hit and run while parked) Lancaster insurance rang me to tell me my premium on the Z just went up 30% even though I had renewed the Z policy 3 months before!!!! So if all those systems are so connected, I struggle to see the point of a paperwork exercise.

My goddam Amsterdam parking ticket found its way to my house in the UK a couple of weeks later!! And we still need to do a bit of paper for zero tax!?

OK this is clearly out of my circle of control or influence so kind of a pointless argument I guess! Rant over, smiley face back on! :D

I naively assumed the historic thing would happen automatically, so when i tried to tax the car after it was 40yrs old, i got really frustrated when the online system kept asking for money!
All the info is at the DVLA's disposal, the first registered date is on the V5, and yet i had to 'tell them' it was now historic and then still apply for the free tax!

In a world of online information over load it makes no sense too me, but ho hum :(
