R200 rebuild

Hi having no luck at all,
I bought a diff from a member last year and it seems it is no good as just fitted and after 300miles is whining very loudly. No clunks though.
It does this under and off load the noise changes but is still there.
I have Durablend 75w-90 semi synthetic in it is at correct level..

The backlash felt ok before I put diff in but did not check wipe paterns etc,

It looks like it may be pinion bearing acording to what I have read which is a major job.
Any body got a quiet!!! proven R200 3.7 diff for sale.
Don't want to buy any more dodgy 2nd hand stuff.
Can some one confirm what the pinion bearing preload should be and total bearing preload?
I have viewed and read some decent pics on diff setup and think I may be able to do it myself as long as bearings etc are availiable.
Could also some one confirm that the r200 diff does not use a crushable spacer to setup pionion bearing preload?
For if it has this is what has caused the problem as someone has previoulsy relace the seal and just torqued up the bolt, as the bolt is very new looking.

Alternativly how much whould it cost to get a specialist to set it up again?

Grateful for any help and tips or parts:(:(

I've had the same problem Andrew. Bought 3 r200 diffs and I'm still stuck with a noisy one. I even bought a full rebuild kit with all new bearing and seals. Payed a specialist company to do all the work and it only made a 7 miles trip before locking solid. Took it back and they rebuilt it again and it's now really noisy so I took it out.

IMO the problem is these diffs are now bedded in so if you try to rebuild one will never go back exactly the same. I've spent a small fortune to try and get a quiet r200 with the quaif fitted and gave up in the end.

Is it not the Quaif itself which makes it noisey?
Is it clunking or just knocking?
I get what you are on about, But surley if it is built correctly it should not be too noisy, I would take it its the bearings making the noise?
Where did you get the rebuild kit and how much did it cost?
Its difficult to tell if its noisy, I was wondering if you could use a drill to test the diffs for noise by spining it up to a realistic speed.
The one I just fitted is noisy even when coasting with clutch in, and its not wheel bearings before you ask as the old diff was much quieter.
Thanks
Andrew

The noise is from the crown wheel and pinion.

If you don't strip the pinion assembly then you've got a better chance. You only have to shim left to right then.

I got all the bearings and seals from mjp. Cost around £300 I think, maybe more. I don't think they would be require though as these diffs never had a hard life.

I have found that the carrier (side) bearings are generic types no 30409 which can be had for £25.00.
Nissan are ripping us off?
Asmuch as I can make out if the pateren is not centred and is split as in Heal and Toe then it is the pinion heaight which is at fault if the are in the same position but off centre then it is the carrier side which need shimed.
Wher do you get the shims though?

I am refering to the diagnostics you can use to determine the fault with a diff, eg the pattern made by the meshing teeth,
The heel is owards the centre of the gear the toe the outside, If in one direction they mesh on the toe, and in reverse they mesh at the heal then you adust this by raising or lowering the pinion height with shims or faulty bearings.
If they are together but off centre th pinion height is correct but the side bearings need shimmed to bring it to the centre etc.
I think that is correct!:D

Andrew, methinks Rob is asking you to proof read before posting :)

th

And the list goes on !!

Don't know about the R200 pinion bearing, but I'm told the R180 one is NLA :(
