My 260Z Rebuild

Hey Guys!

I've had my car about a year now, and although I've not done much too it I thought I'd start my build thread!

Following a vast amount of cocking around before getting this car, (See here: http://zclub.net/forum/new-website/21877-hey-guys-240z-wanted-see-my-2-2-a-2.html) I finally managed to get it home and have started to do some work to it.

Its a 1978 260Z 2 seater. Its pretty solid body wise. The rear arches are starting to go and there is a hole in the drivers floor pan that has been badly patched. The inner wings are pretty sound though, as is most of the engine bay bar the rad support panel and bonnet support panel.

After removing the panels I started to strip the interior:

And start taking the loom out of both the engine bay and the interior. This was scary stuff for me! Everything is labelled using white elec tape and a perm marker ready to be installed again once the shell has been worked....

Engine bay with the loom stripped. The car was originally white, but someone has very badly painted it red in the past! I think it will go back to white when I come around to getting it painted....

Its just a rented garage which is about 26 miles from my house at the moment. Bit of a pain in the bum! Hopefully I can buy one of my own over the next few years.

Hey Russ!

Its not all gone, but lots of it has mate. The shell etc is gone and a few other bits and bobs, but lots of the smaller bits etc I still have and am trying to sell!

I managed to get the engine and box out last weekend, and fully get the whole wiring loom out. I've labelled it up but its scary as hell seeing all those connectors and a mess of wire on the garage floor!

I am dreading putting my loom in....I get my shell back from the paint shop this weekend and will start the rebuild

Managed to get the engine out a few weekends ago! Sooo easy compared to a more modern car like the S2000 I did last year!

Making some progress now well done starting the project can some times be as hard as finishing it Don't know about 260 wiring looms ,but on the 280 most of the connection blocks will only fit in one place and are colour coded those that are not leave till last and it usually becomes obvious by the length of cable to were it will reach ,if not someone one here will be able to help Good luck

Thanks for all your replies and helpfull comments guys! Seems to be a few of us in South Wales now Gary! We all need a meet as was suggested in messages!

I have managed to get some more dismantling done on the car. I've taken off the front subframe and suspension, hubs and arms plus the rear arms and diff mounts along with the diff. (can anyone confirm it should be R200 on a '78 260Z? Its much bigger than the one from the 240Z I have)

It's basically ready for shot blasting now, bar a few little things like the brake pipes and a few brackets. I need to take the door cards off and access weather or not the doors can be saved from the rot at the bottom or weather I will need to source replacements. Does anyone have any recommendations for a reasonably priced good shot blaster?

Ohh good lord!!
Looks like something was hungry and took a bite out of your wheelarch!!
I thought mine was bad but it didnt have anything like that much rust.
You're well on your way though, most of us have been there but expect to find more rust under all that black underseal.
Are doing the welding yourself?
If so, you are going to get so much pride in restoring a rusted old car into something really nice.
